The next morning, the air was crisp and cool, the kind of quiet that only belonged to the countryside.

Taehyung stirred awake, his body unused to the stillness of Busan's village mornings. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he stretched lazily before dragging himself out of the guest room. When he pushed open the heavy wooden door, the early sunlight spilled inside, painting the floor in a golden hue.

He blinked at the sight before him.

Jungkook was already outside, sleeves rolled up, neat and spotless even at dawn. His hair was slightly damp, as if he had already washed up. In the garden, he crouched low, carefully planting new saplings. A bamboo pipe carried underground spring water, trickling into an earthen pot, which Jungkook scooped into a tin jug and used to water the rows of green.

There was a quiet rhythm in the way he worked - deliberate, focused, calm. The kind of rhythm Taehyung had never seen in Seoul, where everything was rush, noise, and deadlines.

For a moment, Taehyung just stood there in the doorway, frozen. His lips parted slightly as he watched the younger man, sunlight bouncing off Jungkook's pale skin, a few strands of hair sticking to his forehead.

It wasn't the angry, crying, shouting Jungkook he had seen last week. This was... different. Strong, independent, strangely serene.

And yet, Taehyung's chest tightened with something he couldn't name.

Jungkook, without looking up, called softly toward the house, his voice calm and low:

"Close the door. You'll let the cold in."

---

Taehyung ignored Jungkook's order to close the door and stepped out anyway, folding his arms against the cold breeze. He leaned lazily against the wooden frame, watching.

"Good morning," Taehyung said, his voice softer than usual, almost playful.

Jungkook didn't answer. He pressed the soil down around the sapling with careful hands, eyes locked on the ground. His silence was sharper than words.

Taehyung tilted his head, forcing a smile. "You know... you look like some countryside drama hero right now. All neat, watering plants at dawn. If someone filmed this, you'd get fanclubs in a day."

Still nothing.

Undeterred, Taehyung crouched a little closer, trying to peek at Jungkook's expression. "Seriously, Kookie, how are you so clean already? Did you wake up before the rooster? Or do you have some secret village magic?"

Finally, Jungkook's eyes flicked up at him. The gaze was cold, flat - nothing like the playful sparkle Taehyung remembered from a year ago.

"Why are you talking so much?" Jungkook muttered, standing and picking up the watering jug. He brushed past Taehyung, the faint smell of fresh earth clinging to him.

Taehyung followed with a small laugh, trying again. "Because it's morning. And you're ignoring me. So someone has to keep this garden lively."

Jungkook stopped mid-step, shoulders stiff. He turned slightly, eyes narrowing.

"Don't act like nothing happened between us, Taehyung. Stop playing silly."

The playful smile slipped from Taehyung's lips for just a second. But he quickly masked it again, stepping closer with a half-smirk, half-sigh.

"Fine," he murmured, "then let me act like something did happen... because I still remember everything."

The silence that followed was heavier than the cold morning air.
