Chapter Six: Coffee, and Muffins

Brianna woke up to light shining into her room through her curtains. She removed her arms from under the blankets, and stretched them above her head. Brianna brought them back down to her side, but grabbed her phone on her way down.

She pressed the middle button to light up the screen. '9:57 AM'

She sighed, and tossed her phone to the opposite side of her on the bed. She didn't have anything else to do, so she got out of bed, and went to the bathroom and showered.

She came back out with a towel wrapped around her body, and her head. Brianna opened her drawers and pulled out a pair of white, shredded skinny jeans, and a blue, long sleeved shirt with Cookie Monster on the front of it, a pair of socks, and underwear.

Brianna changed into her clothes, and dried her hair, then straightened it, and putting on her favorite pair of black converse.

She went over to her bed and sat down, contemplating what she was going to do that day.

Her phone buzzed beside her. She picked it up and unlocked it.

From: Jeremy
Hey :)

To: Jeremy
Hello!!!(:

From: Jeremy
I was wondering if you had any plans for today?

To: Jeremy
None at all. Why?

From: Jeremy
Well, I don't either. So, I was wondering if we could hang out today....

To: Jeremy
Really?! That would be cool!!(:

From: Jeremy
Cool! Meet me at the park?

To: Jeremy
You got it, dude! See ya in a bit.

From: Jeremy
Gotcha!! (:

Brianna locked her phone, an shoved it in her pocket. She smiled widely.

'A friend.'

Those words kept replaying in her head.

She smiled, and got up off the bed, and went over to her door. She unlocked it, opened it, walked out and shut it behind her. She walked down the steps to the front door.

No one was in the living room. Her house was empty as far as she could tell. She opened the front door, and closed it behind her. 'Freedom.' She thought. She smiled to herself as she walked down the side walk.

It was kind of chilly out, but if you stood in certain a spots it was warm. The wind blew occasionally, cooling the air. A few white clouds cascaded over the town. An all around good looking day.

Brianna went around the corner nearest the park. She looked ahead to see someone sitting on the bench, their phone in their face. As she got closer she could tell it was Jeremy.

She walked down the pathway to the bench. Jeremy must not have noticed she was there because he still had his phone out. She grinned as she walked over to him.

Brianna cleared her throat, snapping him out of it. "Oh hey, Brianna. Sorry about that." He apologized, putting his phone in his pocket.

"It's fine. You got here pretty quick. I thought I was the only one that lived close to the park."

"Haha. I guess not. I just live a couple houses down." Jeremy explained. "So, I haven't had breakfast. Wanna get some?"

"I haven't either. So, sure." She agreed. "Wait. I'm a Sophomore. I can't drive."

"No worries. I can drive."

"Thank goodness." She sighed. "Because I'm not really up to walking that far."

"You must have been reading my mind, because I didn't want to either." He smiled.

Jeremy was traditionally handsome. He had brown hair. He had gorgeous blue/green eyes. He was very muscular, and tall. About 4 inches taller than Brianna, so that made Jeremy 5'11, and Brianna 5'7.

They crossed the road, and walked down the sidewalk, Jeremy leading the way. They stopped at a chestnut colored, two story, with three cars in the driveway. "This is my house."

"Nice." She smiled.

"I guess. Lets go inside for a minute. I'll tell my parents I'm taking the car." Jeremy said. Brianna and him climbed the steps of his house. Jeremy opened the door for Brianna and she stepped in followed by Jeremy. Jeremy was now in front of her, and she followed him in. The front door lead into a kitchen. It was very open. On the opposite side was the living room. Containing what looked like to be Jeremy's family. Jeremy walked into the living room, Brianna tailing behind him.

She stood in the door way as Jeremy walked over to the couch where his parents were seated. Jeremy had a rather large family.

His mother and father were sitting on opposite sides of the couch. His little brother, which appeared to be about 12 was sat on the floor. His little sister, who appeared to be about 14.

"Mom, dad can I use the car?" Jeremy asked.

"Well, before we answer your question, would you like to tell us who your friend is?" His mother asked, staring at Brianna in wonderment.

"Oh, sorry. Mom, dad this is Brianna. Brianna this is my mom, Amber, my dad, Richard, my sister, Jackie, and my brother, Shane." He introduced.

"Hi." Brianna smiled, giving a small wave. Brianna was normally the shy type. She wasn't really up to talking to strangers.

"It's nice to meet you, sweetie. You sure are pretty. Are you Jeremy's girlfriend?" His mom asked. Brianna's and Jeremy's eyes widened as his siblings laughed at them.

"No, no, no, mom. Now that I have introduced, can we use the car? Before you ask, we're going to that coffee shop in town for breakfast."

"Okay. Be careful."

"We will. C'mon, Brianna." Jeremy said.

"It was nice to meet you!" His mom called.

"You too!" Brianna shouted back, exiting Jeremy's house an getting into the car.

"Sorry about my mom." Jeremy sighed, putting the keys in the ignition.

"No need to apologize. She's nice."

"I little bit to nice sometimes." He sighed, starting the car, and driving down the road. Brianna chuckled at his comment. His family appeared to be a lot different than hers. His seemed normal, and happy. Hers was messed up and miserable.

As they drove down the road, kids from school walked on the sidewalk. As they passed them, and they noticed Brianna, the school weirdo, and Jeremy, the jock, in the same car, they gave them crooked looks. Brianna just shrugged them off. Jeremy didn't really seem to notice.

When they arrived, they got out, and Jeremy locked the doors. Jeremy got ahead of Brianna and opened the coffee shop door for her, and they stepped inside.

The smell of freshly baked muffins, doughnuts, cake, and different types of hot drinks all came rushing to her nose. The smell of the coffee shop was one of Brianna's favorite smells.

They walked over to the counter wear a bored looking, middle aged woman stood. "Hi, I'd like a vanilla coffee, and a blue berry muffin." Brianna ordered.

"And, I'd like a regular black coffee, and a piece of chocolate cake." Jeremy added. The woman typed in the orders.

"$8.13." She said, holding out her hand. Brianna swore under her breath. She didn't bring any money.

"Don't worry I've got it." Jeremy whispered to her, handing the cashier a 10.

"Thanks." Brianna smiled.

"$1.87 is your change." She replied holding out the money. Jeremy took the money from her hand as she sat their stuff up in the counter for them to take. Brianna gave her a friendly smile, took her food and drink, and made her way to a booth in the corner of the room. Jeremy sat down across from her.

"Finally, food." Brianna sighed, picking up her muffin, and biting the top of it. Jeremy chuckled at her as he took a drink of his coffee.

Half way through their 'breakfast', the door of the shop opened. Brianna looked behind her to see who it was. Meagan. Brianna's eyes got wide, and she began to sweat.

"What's wrong?" Jeremy asked.

"Meagan's here." She almost whispered. Jeremy rose up his head, looking around the room. Finally he spotted her in line.

"If she says anything to you, I'll back you up." Jeremy guaranteed. Brianna nodded, with a gulp.

"Yeah. Thanks." She herd Meagan say. Immediately she could feel someone's gaze on her. "Oh! Hey Jeremy!" Meagan squealed from behind Brianna. Jeremy froze.

All of a sudden, Meagan appeared beside their table. "Hi... Meagan." Jeremy said. Meagan must have not noticed Brianna.

"Who's this?" She asked. Brianna turned her head to look straight at Jeremy. Meagan must have noticed who it was, because she gasped.

"It's Brianna. If you haven't notice by now." Jeremy said, gesturing to Brianna.

"Ewwwww. What are you doing here with the weirdo? Did she like force you or something?" Meagan squealed.

"She's not a weirdo. And no she didn't force me." Jeremy said, already annoyed by her presence.

"Then why are you here with that thing? You can get some kind of disease!" She said.

"Just shut up, Meagan." Jeremy sighed, getting frustrated. Brianna chuckled.

"What are you laughing at, freak?!" Meagan shouted. Brianna immediately shut up.

"Don't talk to her that way. We don't want you here! Just go back to your gang of sluts where you belong." Jeremy said. Brianna grinned widely at what Jeremy said. It would have took REAL guts for Brianna to say something like that to Meagan.

"See! She's already changed you! You should leave whil-"

"LEAVE!" Jeremy shouted loudly. This made Brianna jump. She looked up from the table to see Jeremy red in the face. Meagan had a shocked look on her face. She then gave Brianna a death glare and left.

Jeremy let out a frustrated sigh. "Thanks for that." Brianna smiled.

"Your welcome. I had enough of Meagan thinking she could control anything and everything." Jeremy said. Brianna nodded. "I'll be right back." Jeremy said, getting up to go to the bathroom.

Once again the words ''A friend' repeated in her head. A real friend. A real friend that actually cares. This is all she needed.

A friend.
