"A few days later, Darsh and Satakshi sat side by side in the gynecologist's clinic. The familiar smell of antiseptic filled the room, and Satakshi's nervous fingers clutched Darsh's hand tightly as she lay back on the examination table. Darsh gave her palm a reassuring squeeze, his eyes fixed on her face as the doctor prepared for the ultrasound."
"The soft hum of the machine filled the silence. Satakshi's heartbeat quickened. She had been through this once already, but still, a strange mix of excitement and nervousness rushed through her. As the doctor moved the probe gently across her belly, her eyes suddenly widened in disbelief. She leaned closer to the screen, adjusting the angle, as though she couldn't trust what she was seeing."
Satakshi noticed her expression immediately: Kya hua, doctor? Sab theek toh hai?
The doctor glanced at her, still a little stunned: Everything is fine... more than fine, actually. But—
"The doctor paused, looking back at the screen, her brows furrowed in shock."
Darsh straightened in his seat, his voice carried a sharp edge of concern: But what?
The doctor exhaled, almost smiling in disbelief: There are... two fetuses. Two heartbeats.
"For a moment, both Darsh and Satakshi froze, their minds struggling to process the words."
Satakshi blinked rapidly: Do? Mtlb... twins?
The doctor nodded, still half-shocked herself: Yes. Twins. Clear as day.
Darsh shook his head slightly, his grip on Satakshi's hand tightening: No, wait—last time, you said there was only one. I remember clearly, doctor. How is this possible?
The doctor gave a small, baffled laugh, trying to explain: You're right. In your first ultrasound, there was only one baby visible. This happens sometimes in early pregnancies, especially if it's what we call a vanishing twin scenario that doesn't vanish. One fetus can be hidden behind the other, or the angle and timing of the scan can make the second heartbeat too faint to detect. That's why only one baby was visible before. But now— "she turned the monitor slightly towards them, pointing—" you can see both. Two tiny lives. Two strong heartbeats.
Satakshi's eyes widened, tears instantly brimming, she whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief: Is this... is this real?
Darsh leaned forward, staring at the rhythmic flicker of two little heartbeats on the screen. His throat felt tight, his usual composure faltering: Doctor... are you absolutely sure? You're not making a mistake?
The doctor chuckled softly at their disbelief: I've been practicing for years, Darsh. Believe me, this is no mistake. Congratulations... you're having twins.
"Satakshi covered her mouth with her trembling hand, her body shaking with a mix of shock and overwhelming emotion. Darsh, still dazed, looked between the doctor and the screen, as if expecting one of them to correct this miracle. But no correction came. Just two tiny heartbeats echoing through the room, filling the silence with the promise of double joy."
"The doctor finally printed out the ultrasound pictures and handed them to Satakshi with a smile that still carried traces of her own surprise. Satakshi stared at the small black-and-white image in disbelief, her fingers trembling as she held it. Darsh leaned closer, his arm brushing against hers, eyes fixed on the two tiny shapes visible on the screen."
Satakshi whispered, almost afraid that saying it aloud would make it untrue: Two.
Darsh shook his head slowly, his lips parting in amazement: I... I still can't believe it.
"The drive back home was quiet, their hands intertwined tightly, neither speaking—just stealing glances at the ultrasound photo as though confirming again and again that it was real. When they entered the house, the soft murmur of conversation greeted them. Meenu and Rajeev were sitting on the couch, sipping tea. Just as Darsh and Satakshi stepped inside, Abhi came bounding down the stairs, his usual grin plastered on his face."
Abhi dashed forward eagerly, eyes sparkling: Bhai! Did you get another ultrasound picture of the baby? Show me!
"Darsh glanced at Satakshi, their silence stretching as if they still hadn't found the right words to explain the miracle."
Satakshi bit her lip, her voice soft but trembling with awe: Abhi...it's.... it's not just one baby.
Abhi frowned in confusion: What do you mean?
Darsh's lips curved into a disbelieving smile as he held up the photo: We're having twins.
"For a moment, the room froze. Meenu's cup paused mid-air, Rajeev blinked rapidly as though unsure he'd heard correctly, and Abhi's jaw dropped."
Abhi shouted, his voice echoing through the house: Twins?! No way! You're serious?
Satakshi nodded, still stunned herself: Yes... the doctor was as shocked as we are. But it's real.
"For a moment, silence filled the room—then Meenu gasped, her eyes welling up instantly. She placed her cup aside and stood, her hands covering her mouth."
Meenu exclaimed, her voice trembling with joy: Twins?!
She rushed to Satakshi and cupped her face lovingly. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she looked at her daughter-in-law, pride and affection overflowing: Do do bacche... Satakshi, ye toh double khushi hai!
Satakshi's lips curved into a teary smile as she hugged Meenu tightly: Mujhe bhi vishwas nahi ho raha, Maa... doctor bhi shocked thi.
Rajeev, who had been silent for a few seconds, finally broke into a wide smile. He adjusted his glasses, shaking his head with disbelief: Well, Darsh beta, looks like you'll need double the patience now.
Darsh let out a soft chuckle, the first real smile since the shock at the clinic: I think you're right, Dad.
Abhi, still too excited to sit still, snatched the ultrasound photo from Darsh's hand and stared at it as though it were treasure: Wait, wait—so this tiny thing is baby number one, and this... this is baby number two?
Darsh nodded, amusement flickering in his eyes: Exactly.
Abhi grinned ear to ear: That means I'm going to be the best double uncle ever! Oh, this is insane! Maa, do you realize we're going to have twins in the house?
Meenu laughed through her tears, pulling Abhi into a hug before turning back to Darsh and Satakshi: Bas, ab apna khayal aur zyada rakhna. Satakshi, ab tumhe rest ki aur bhi zarurat hogi.
"Satakshi smiled softly, glancing at Darsh, who was still staring at her with quiet disbelief and overflowing affection."
Rajeev placed a firm hand on Darsh's shoulder: Beta, ab tumhe double responsibility nibhaani hogi. But knowing you, I'm sure you'll handle it well.
Darsh nodded slightly, his gaze drifting back to Satakshi: I'll handle anything... for them.
"The family stood around, laughter and joy filling every corner of the room. And as Satakshi looked around—at Meenu's teary smile, Rajeev's proud eyes, Abhi's unstoppable excitement, and Darsh's quiet love—she realized this moment would be etched in her heart forever."
