The Moment That Shattered the Chamber
The entrance of Sirius Black did not merely interrupt the proceedings it fractured them.
For several long seconds after the doors opened, the Wizengamot ceased to resemble a court of law. It became something far more human: a room filled with shock, fear, anger, and, in some cases, dawning realization.
Many of the older witches and wizards rose halfway from their seats before remembering themselves. A few clutched their robes as though they had seen a ghost. Others leaned forward, eyes narrowed, trying to reconcile the living man before them with the official records that had declared him a mad murderer for over a decade.
Whispers spread like wildfire:
"He was in Azkaban..."
"No trial... I remember, there was no trial..."
"Merlin help us, if this is true..."
Several members who had once supported the Ministry's swift imprisonment of Sirius now looked deeply uncomfortable, suddenly fascinated by their notes, their sleeves, anything that avoided meeting his gaze.
At the center of the upheaval sat Cornelius Fudge, who looked as though the ground had betrayed him personally. His earlier bluster drained away, replaced by the pale, tight expression of a man realizing that events had slipped entirely beyond his control.
He dabbed at his forehead repeatedly, though the chamber was not warm.
"This... this is highly irregular," he muttered more than once, as though repeating the phrase might restore order.
It did not.
Beside him, Dolores Umbridge wore a smile stretched so thin it bordered on grotesque. Her usual simpering confidence faltered, replaced by sharp, birdlike glances around the chamber as she tried to determine how quickly the political tide might turn and how to avoid being caught beneath it.
Her signature cough sounded again, but this time it failed to command attention.
No one was listening.
Unlike the others, Amelia Bones did not react with panic.
She watched.
Her sharp eyes moved from Sirius, to Hadrian, to the Ministry bench, already weighing possibilities. Where others saw scandal, she saw procedure. Where others felt outrage, she sensed the unmistakable scent of a miscarriage of justice something she had spent her career hunting.
The silence she eventually restored was not born of authority alone, but of curiosity.
If this man had truly never been tried...
Then the law itself had been bypassed.
And that was something Amelia Bones would not ignore.
Near the upper tiers, Albus Dumbledore remained seated, hands folded, gaze intent.
Where others reacted outwardly, Dumbledore's reaction was entirely internal.
This was not surprise he had suspected Sirius's innocence for years.
This was recognition.
Recognition that Hadrian Potter had not acted impulsively... but strategically.
By revealing Sirius here, before the full Wizengamot, Hadrian had ensured that the matter could not be buried, silenced, or handled quietly by the Ministry. The revelation had been placed in the only arena where truth could not be easily suppressed: public magical law.
It was a move both bold and ruthlessly precise.
And it signaled, unmistakably, that the boy he once guided was now playing a far more complex game.
Among the ancient families, reactions were far more controlled.
Those aligned with old traditions did not gasp or shout. They observed Sirius with the careful neutrality reserved for moments of political significance. Some inclined their heads ever so slightly not a greeting, but an acknowledgment.
A wrongfully imprisoned heir of the Noble House of Black was not merely a personal tragedy.
It was a matter of lineage, law, and precedent.
And if the Ministry had erred once...
What else had it mishandled?
Through it all, Hadrian Potter did not raise his voice again.
He did not need to.
The storm he had unleashed spoke loudly enough.
The chamber's shock, the Ministry's unease, the shifting attitudes of the Wizengamot all of it confirmed what he had intended from the start:
This was no longer just about underage magic.
It was about justice denied.
And before the day was done, the entire wizarding government would be forced to confront it.
