You live on a fairly big island country (think britian or ireland). Its split up among different petty kings/queens who are more like clan/tribe leader warlords who fight each other for land, cattle, and women.
You are one, a fairly powerful one among your competitors. Being a well renowned, rich, beautiful and skilled warrior queen, you would make a hell of a prize for any of your enemies harem.
Then something worse than your annoying neighbors comes to your shores: the vanguard of an army from the mainland.
Even this advance force is quite possible, with longships of many sizes full of soldiers, horses, and supplies.
Your army of light or medium infantry would stand little chance against many foot and mounted archers, infantry of all weight and armored cavalry men
