Slowly starting to feel control over my body again, I leave the darkness I have been drifting in. My surroundings are soft, warm light is hitting my skin. The aroma of a home-cooked meal hits my nose and I finally decide to open my eyes.
Bundled up in the fuzzy blanket, my arms and legs escape it from the sides for a good stretch. Leaving the coziness of the warmth, I hate when the cold touches my skin, so I quickly pull my limb back, curl in a ball and snuggle against the fluffy fabric. Sweet delicious arome fills the room, making my stomach growl. I haven't slept this good in a while and I want to stay a bit longer, but the hunger is urging me to go investigate the source of what smells like pastry. Staring at the familiar lamp over my head, I keep flipping an imaginary coin in my head, deciding whether to go or take a few more minutes.
Only after staring at the simple modern chandelier for a few seconds, I find out where I am. Or more like where I am not. Not an infirmary at the academy, or my room, or the academy all together. My body sprung on the bed, then I curse at myself when blood rushes into my brain, making my head spin slightly. Frantically looking around the room, it all clicks together when I notice the familiar scenery from behind the window, the wardrobes, even the small night stand – this is Shannie's house.
Thinking of Ms. Do'or brought back the memory of her holding me when I passed out. I jump out of the bed and run downstairs, not giving a damn about the cold flooring sending shivers through my body when my bare soles touch it. I didn't even check my clothes. I only know I am wearing something soft and baggy, when the white fabric flops in the air as I run through the house.
Jumping through the stairs, I take two, then three at once. It's like I forgot what exhaustion is. My body feels light, definitely in a better condition than what I was in before. It made me worry about how many days have passed this time. But that's not my main priority right now. All I want to do is check on Ms. Do'or. Woreus did bring me out of the school, but we were still on the Umbras side when we fell, and Shannie was there with me.
The fear of something happening to her is lifter when I turn behind the corner, pass through the door into the kitchen and see a female with a pixie cut roaming around. I finally take the breath I didn't know I was holding, running towards Ms. Do'or and hugging her tight the moment I am close to her.
Ms. Do'or: I am glad to see the strength is returning to you, but if you squeeze any harder, I might pass out.
Reluctantly, I release my grip on her body and let go off Ms. Do'or. She giggles, then her smile fades away as she asks me what's wrong. My cheeks get soaked from tears that escaped and I didn't notice it at first. Using the back of my hands, I keep brushing away the stubborn eyes that won't stop crying. Only after a few sniffles to clear my stuffy nose, I can finally ask about her.
Me: You were there... at Umbras. How-
Ms. Do'or: How are you feeling?
Me: Well rested for once. But that's not important right now.
Ms. Do'or: Yes, I am thinking the same. It is important you eat.
Ms. Do'or is perfectly avoiding my questions, cutting me off before I can even get them out. She walks from the counter to the table, taking and placing plates of food around. At the end, she takes two mugs with a steamy liquid inside, then sits at one of the chairs. She points at the one across the table and looks at me. I hate being treated like a kid again and I want the answers, but one look at the food has my stomach growling loud again. I roll my eyes, sigh too, but don't protest yet.
Afraid I will feel sick, I took small bites and ate slowly, taking side glances at Ms. Do'or. She is focused on her food, but I know she saw me staring at her. Without saying anything, Shannie continues cutting the meat, combining it with a potato on the fork and takes a bite. The food looks good and nausea has not bothered me yet, so I start cutting off bigger pieces and ate properly.
