It had been over 5 months since the day Louis' life fell apart when he was told Matty had leukemia.
But things were about to change, because that afternoon Zayn walked in Matty's room with a smile on his face, and Louis knew what that meant.
"Yes?" Louis asked the doctor.
"Yes" Zayn nodded.
Louis wasn't the kind of person to go around hugging other people, but this definitely deserved a hug, so Louis did just that, but just for a few seconds.
"Thank you" Louis said sincerely, his eyes filling with happy tears "Thank you so much for everything you did for Matty".
"No need to thank me" Zayn replied "It was a team effort, we all did our part, and that includes you".
Two days after Louis told Matty about the baby, the little boy started chemo again. It lasted 8 days, and after that, they did a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, which luckily came back clear. Then the next few weeks were all about making sure Matty's body rebuilt it's immune system, and although it was going to take a couple of months for it to go completely back to normal, Zayn had anticipated that Matty could be ready to leave the hospital any day now.
And that day had arrived.
Matty was going home!
"When can we go?" Louis asked, he had a huge smile on his face.
"In the next couple of hours" Zayn replied "We still have to talk about how Matty's care should be at home, and the future appointments to monitor him".
"Yes, of course" Louis nodded, he was still smiling.
"You should tell Matty the good news" Zayn proposed "In the meantime, I'll go get the discharge papers ready, and I'll tell a nurse to come take off the central line from Matty's arm".
"Okay" Louis agreed "That sounds great".
They had been talking away from Matty's ear shot, so after Zayn left to do the things he needed to do, Louis walked up to the bed, where Matty was playing with his Mr. Potato Head.
"Monkey" Louis said as he approached him.
Matty looked up, and just stared up at him, waiting for his father to continue.
"I have a very important question for you" Louis beamed and sat down on the bed next to him.
"Wha' papa?" Matty wondered.
"Would you like to go home?" Louis asked.
"Yesh" Matty nodded eagerly, he had completely forgotten about his toy now.
"Then it's settled, we're going home today" Louis announced.
"Yay!" Matty cheered excitedly.
Louis smiled at his cute reaction, and before he knew what was happening, Matty had stood up on the bed, and he had thrown himself at Louis.
"Home papa!" Matty said while he hugged him.
"Yes monkey, we're going home" Louis laughed.
The little boy giggled, and is his excitement he kneed Louis' belly a little, but not too hard.
"Be careful with your brother or sister, baby" Louis warned, and he put his hand on the spot.
Matty gasped and he let go of his father's neck, then he kneeled on the bed and he placed his hand Louis's belly, and he patted it.
