I hear some fast footsteps, like someone's running, then I see a figure coming towards me, a woman. She comes out from the darkness of the corridor and I can look at her properly, she's Joanne. The girl approaches me and she greets me with an half smile and I get back. She asks me about her best friend, obviously, and I try to tell her the disgrace in the less hurtful words, but the truth is so simple and raw, Hayley is dying inside because of that bloody cancer.
"Jo, sit down please. I need you to be strong."
"Damn Jonny, what the fuck is happened?" She asks a bit afraid of the answer
"Well, your friend, my wife, she... She is really ill..."
"What!?!" She almost yells interrupting me
"Yeah, she has cancer. It's not so grown up and isn't spread all over her body, so she could be saved, she might survive."
I can read shock, sadness, pain, fear in her chocolate eyes. I can understand her, I can understand the woman who saved a random girl from suicide and now this random girl is dying because of nature, because of some demented cells. She stays motionless on the chair in the waiting room with her mouth open and eyes pouring tears, she seems a crying statue. Joanne suddenly gets up and hugs me tightly hiding her face in my face to cry louder and louder. Now I'm trying to stop this little creature, much shorter than me, but without success.
"Not her, why, fucking why!?" She mutters while sobbing
"Jo I know how you feel, I'm in the same state. Do you think I can support her without feeling any pain? No, I can't. I don't even know why I haven't died because of dehydration yet. My eyes are dry, I haven't tears anymore. It's all the day I'm here and I didn't even go to Phil's to see my children and it's 11pm. I'm not blaming you for your pain, I'm just telling you to stay strong." I didn't even know I could tell my feelings to anyone now
"You're right Jon."
Said that, Jo reaches the window from which we can see her sleeping. She seems so in peace, like in an eternal blissful bubble. A little bird whose wing went broken because of flying in the stormy night. This reminds me of the lyrics of Paradise:
In the night, the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night, the stormy night away she'd flyNo she can't close her eyes and fly away, she must fight and win, firstly for herself and then for us, she's still a young woman who has family and friends that love her. She won't be awake until tomorrow morning because of medicines so I can go to take home my little puppies. Guy comes in the room to relieve me and he stays with Jo who wants to stay there awake till Hayley will wake up.
"Goodnight guys, call me if anything happens and thank you." I say
"You're welcome, mate." Replies Guy
I walk outside in search of my car and I realise I got here with the ambulance and not with my vehicle, so I catch a bus and head to Phil's. During the ride I saw a guy crying silently in a corner and I approach him, I just want to help him, if I ever could.
"Hey, can I sit here with you?" I ask him
"Uhm... Yes, I guess. Who are you?" He turns his watery black eyes to me and I understand he's broken
"I'm a guy like you, maybe a bit older and you?"
"As you said, a guy like you." He firmly states
"I saw you here alone on this bus and I'm alone too, so I thought I could be in a good company with you." I quietly say
"Why did you think that?"
"Because I'm broken too."
His expression changes immediately and fakes a smile and tells me he's Richard, but I can call him Rik. He's a tiny thirty-years-old man on this bus this night because he wanted a place to hide and cry, because his girlfriend cheated on him and he discovered it when he was going purpose to her.
