Chapter Thirteen~
Saoirse~
Hastily I grabbed my sword out of its scabbard. The comfort of having it grounded my fear. Tears clouded my vision as the wind whipped my face. I tried to pull my hood up but it kept falling away.
Densase continued his ascent to the clouds. His breath was ragged.
I pulled the energy of the world around me to me and him. My grip on it was loosening though.
In the back of my mind I became aware of three other presences trying to reach me. All full of emotion, though one was not completely human. I pushed them back, not letting their fear, hate and raw desperation cloud my resolve.
I trained my eyes ahead at the storm.
Lightning streaked around us but no rain fell. Loud bangs echoed through the land as the the lightning charged the earth with new energy.
Loud laboured flaps beat rhythmically below us.
The black dragon roared in defiance, Densase stayed silent, holding back to conserve energy.
All too soon we were in the clouds.
Colour leached out of the air.We were still rising but there was no end to the grey and murk. The clouds did strange things to sound. The air stirred no longer. Not even with Densase's beating wings.
His breath was ragged.
Protect me while you can.I concentrated hard, pulling all my energy together, all the energy around us. But the storm had blocked it. It was smothering us in it's embrace.
The grey deepened and laughter reached my mind through my dragons ears.
In front of us the shadows grew long, grew into a dragon.
'Why are you still trying, give up your fruitless efforts and die quickly.'
I trained my mind and envisioned the storm's energy and power like a flowing river. I could not move this river to my will, I couldn't control it's rushing rapids.
All of a sudden I was in agony, my screams only matched by Densase's. My body writhed under the sensation of being boiled alive, or of the feeling of a thousand swords ripping into my flesh.
His words were loud and cruel in my head, 'You will die painfully for insolents. You will die in pain, but first your dragon will die. You will his pain, and feel the unbearable loss of your Bonding. Feel the agony.'
One word ripped through my body, through my mind, through my fathers, through Densases, through my fathers dragons.
Stenven Athiosus staggered, his hands flying to his head.
Densase faltered and dipped in flight. The black dragon convulsed and dropped in agony. When my father straightened, the dragon righted and beat its wings again. But I had felt its desperation.
I slumped in the saddle, under the weight of my realisation. 'How?' I asked weakly.
Athiosus sneered in disgust. 'You pathetic fool.'
Pain ripped through my body, wave after wave. I reached out with my mind, feeling Densases presence, and my fathers, but I could feel the 'Bond' between him and his dragon.
A new scream ripped through the air.
'YOU DARE?!'
Unsure of what I was doing I pressed my mind forward and tried to feel the bond again but it was gone. As was the pain that had tormented me.
My father had vanished.
But I knew his secret.
...
Densase landed in a heap on the battle field where men were slowly picking themselves up off the muddy ground.
There was little hostility as both armies began to help their wounded.
None approached us. But many stared at the sky, clear of all clouds and darkness.
The sun began to energize the land once more and Densase began to gather his strength again.
We must go to home. Now. I thought to Densase.
But David?
We ride to Belidonna now.
