"I think it pooped on me!"
The blonde girl squealed, holding the rabbit at arms length, hopping from one foot to the other as if trying to escape. She wrinkled her nose in disgust, her bright blue eyes wide with surprise. Giovanna huffed, settling her own rabbit into one arm and gently grabs the one from Yasmine's, one in each crook of her arm.
"You're fine," Giovanna said calmly, adjusting her hold on the rabbits. "It's just a little mess, nothing to worry about." She smiled reassuringly at the blonde girl, who still looked uncertain. Gia shot moon a look from the other side of the barn, the girl giggled in response.
Sitting with her legs folded across from Sam, the pair were seated on bales of hay, surrounded by the soft sounds of the barn.
Yasmine gagged in disgust as she stepped over piles of rabbit poop, trying to avoid stepping in any more of it. She scrunched up her face and muttered, "This is so gross," as she made her way across the barn. Giovanna chuckled softly, shaking her head at Yasmine's reaction, while the other girls exchanged amused glances.
Sam happily reached up and accepted the baby from Giovanna, cradling the rabbit gently as Giovanna handed it over. "This is so cool that you get to do this everyday," Sam beams, running her hand over the animal.
"How does your mom know Mr. Langley, anyway?" she asks, her curiosity piqued.
Gia shrugs, holding a hand out for Yasmine to hoist herself over the gate, and into the enclosure with Moon and Sam. "My mom grew up on a farm in Montana, and she's always had a way with animals. She met Mr. Langley years ago when he needed help with his farm, and they've been friends ever since."
She explains, "apparently they needed volunteers on the weekends, and suddenly I have a lot of time on my hands, so here I am."
Sam hums in agreement, eyes darting down at the mention of the tournament. And ultimately the decision her father made to close their dojo. Sam's expression grew distant, her thoughts clearly elsewhere. Giovanna inhales, pulling her lips up. "Come on, I'll show you something that won't poop on you." Yasmine shoots up, Gia hesitates. She hauls her backpack over her shoulder.
"Probably." She adds, Yasmine groans.
Gia smiled faintly, though the expression felt more automatic than amused. She swung the strap of her backpack higher on her shoulder and pushed open the small gate, stepping out of the rabbit enclosure and motioning for the others to follow.
The barn smelled like hay, wood, and animals, warm and earthy. Dust drifted through the slanted beams of sunlight cutting through the high windows.
She'd always liked it here. Animals were simple.
They didn't care about dojos, rivalries, or the complicated web of relationships everyone seemed tangled in lately.
Behind her, Yasmine hopped carefully over another suspicious pile on the floor. "This place is a health hazard," she muttered.
Moon giggled. Gia shook her head, leading them down the narrow aisle between the stalls. Gia shook her head and motioned for them to follow, pushing open the barn door and stepping out into the late afternoon light. The cool air hit her face, carrying the clean smell of grass and earth instead of hay and rabbits.
"Come on," she said over her shoulder.
The girls trailed behind her as she led them across the yard, boots crunching softly over gravel and patches of dirt. The farm stretched out around them, fences, rolling pasture, the distant lowing of cattle somewhere beyond the trees.
