! OUTER BANKS ! (season 1, episode 7) part four
THE WRECK WAS QUIETER THAN USUAL—no clatter of dishes, no loud voices drifting from the kitchen, just the soft hum of the ocean and the distant buzz of the docks. Warm afternoon sun pressed down on the porch outside the back of the Wreck.
John B, Sarah, and Lynni sat clustered around one of the outdoor tables. Kiara leaned against the railing slightly behind Lynni's chair, her elbows propped on it as she stared at her feet. Pope stood nearby, his forearm resting above his head on one of the wooden pillars, shoulders tight with tension.
The silence between them felt thick.
Lynni absently twisted the rings on her fingers—spin, slide, tap—her eyes fixed on her hands like she didn't trust them not to shake.
Finally, John B exhaled and broke the quiet. "Look... he'll come around, alright? It's—" He paused, searching for the right words. "He's doing a JJ thing."
He glanced sideways at Lynni. She didn't look up. Not yet. Her gaze stayed locked on her lap.
Kiara shifted on the railing, arms crossing. "You think he'll go home?"
Pope huffed, looking out at the ocean, his posture still rigid. "There's about a zero percent chance that JJ goes home."
For a split second, Lynni's eyes flicked up—toward Pope, toward the water—but then dropped back to her fingers.
Next to her, John B looked at Sarah and mumbled, "You okay?"
Sarah nodded once, "Yeah," then turned the question around. "Are you?"
John B shrugged, his laugh humorless. "I mean... I'm in one piece, so..."
Silence settled again. Heavy. Uncomfortable.
Then Lynni felt it—a hand on her shoulder.
She turned her head slowly, finding John B watching her with that soft concern. "You okay?" he asked slowly, his voice low enough not to draw attention from the others.
Lynni swallowed and shrugged, her eyes darting down. "Yeah. I'm okay."
A pause.
Then, softer: "I just... I hope JJ's okay."
John B nodded, then moved his hand from her shoulder to her knee, giving it a gentle squeeze. "He's okay," he said firmly. "He always is. I mean, in his JJ sorta way."
