Chapter 2 – These Old Friends
After a ten minute bus ride snooze, I arrived at school. I stepped out into the early morning, it was getting hot out already, and it was only about 8:40am. This summer had been brutal. The sun beat down all day and the steam rose from the ground at night. Though the skies were clear and I enjoyed the summer nights. Sometimes I took time out with my family in the back yard barbequing burgers and stakes…this summer I learned to barbeque my own fish. It was delicious, and that night I drank my first wine. “Let’s pretend we are European tonight”, my mom said with a grin.
Other nights I spent with friends out on the town. Our town was kind of small, but there were plenty of surrounding towns, and all were good for a walk and browsing in old shops, unique clothing boutiques, and the occasional comic book store. Honestly, we lived in a suburban hipster paradise. My friends and I weren’t mall people, we liked the local crowd. The popular kids often went to the mall where the boys chowed down on food court food, and the girls shopped with their only sustenance being smoothies from the food court. I never understood how they could shop all day and eat so little. I would pass out in an hour….
“MANDI!!!!” my best friend Bianca’s voice broke through my remensing of the summer and brought me back to the parking lot.
“Mandi! Mandi! Mandi!” I turned around to see Bianca running full speed at me! Oh no here it comes!
“TACKLE HUG!!!” she shouts and I quickly get ready and brace myself when she flies into me nearly knocking me down.
“Mandi! It’s been FOR-EV-ER! Oh my gosh, how was your ride to school?” Bianca babbled quickly as she let go after squeezing the life out of me.
“What are you talking about B? I just had dinner at your house two nights ago!”
“Oh, but it felt like forever! Do you know how much I have to tell you? SOO much! However not until lunch!” She beamed at me. Looks like the past couple of days were special for her; I wonder what the story is. I know I spent most of my time procrastinating on getting school supplies and then procrastinating on packing said school supplies. Instead of doing the preparation for school, I stayed up late to watch Korean drama, Boys Before Flowers. Again. You see I was a total JPop and Kdrama geek.
“Okay B, but I really got to tell you, If you tackle me that hard again we may just fall over and hit our heads next time” , I laughed.
“Ha-ha, I’m sorry; I guess eating a combo of Frosted Flakes and Lucky Charms isn’t a good idea on the first day”
I stared gap mouthed at her mischievous grin, “Oh my gosh Bianca, did you do that again? Remember last time? Before finals, you were wired on sugar so bad you couldn’t keep yourself still!”
“Oh common Mandi Pandi, that time I poured Cola over the whole bowl. I didn’t do that this morning…what do you think I am some kind of crazy person?!?”
“Actually, that’s exactly what I think you are, but you’re my crazy person.” I told her with a laugh.
This girl was indeed nuts. The first time I met her was way back in elementary school. She was a little candy bar eating rebel back then, always sneaking candies into class, and eating them spoiling her lunch. She had approached me asking me if I wanted to share her candy. She pulled out some Mars bars, gummy worms, and Twix, and a small bag full of little brown bean shaped things.
