Chapter 5 – The Scream
The highlights of the rest of the school day were mostly normal. After lunch Matt, Bianca and I went out to meet Mansur and Darby in front of the office. I was taken again my Mansur; however he stuck closer to Matt, as did Darby. In fact, if she could have, I think she would be hanging on his arm.
All together we proceeded to the Choir room on the same level. It had been a while for me since my last choir class. Last year, I had to take an art class instead for a requirement. Matt went to the tenor section; Bianca and I went to join the altos in the 2nd row. We both had a decent range, but in recent years we shifted to a deeper richer tone than middle school. Back then every girl wanted to be a Soprano. You basically had to force girls to be altos.
Mansur and Darby joined the new additions to the class at the front of the room where they would have their range tested and be placed. We all sat waiting for Mr. Tichner to enter.
“Mandi, look who’s here!” Bianca nodded toward the front of the room on the far right.
I looked over and spied Rico. Apparently he was also in this class. He wagged his eyebrows in our direction. I raised an eyebrow as Bianca giggled by my side. You could practically see the flirt signals floating along the air back and forth between them.
Not that I wasn’t happy for her, but I just had to look away. I looked towards the group up front, and just then Mr. Tichner walked in.
“Hello kids, welcome to another year in choir. This year we will again be competing in the Heritage National Ensemble contests. So let’s concentrate well on our craft and have some fun. I will talk about the upcoming events and music pieces after I place the new students in to their proper places.”
With that he sat down to the piano. Rico, Darby, Mansur, and two other students gathered around the piano as the rest of us listened them all go through scales at different pitches. Then each sang a scale set alone. Rico had a surprising bass voice. He looked like a tenor to me. All the girls swooned for the molten chocolate that was his voice. Add that accent and half of them may just jump him. Bianca gave the girls behind her a possessive glare.
Next was Darby, she sang at such a high pitch I’m surprised that Mr. Tichner’s glasses didn’t crack. She was obviously a Soprano 1. The two other students each got placed in alto and tenor. Finally he got to Mansur. He was so quiet and calm in his singing approach, but as he went up the scale he became louder and clearer. He was able to go pretty high for a male, and his notes were long and steady. I noticed there was silence one he had completed. The class sat in stunned silence. The echo of Mansur’s voice still rung in our ears. It was strong and beautiful. Yet you could feel the hint of sadness.
“Excellent!” Mr. Tichner exclaimed as he stood! “I haven’t heard a purer male vocal in years. Men, you could learn a thing or two from this gentleman here. Excellent job Mansur. Where did you learn such skills?”
“It’s a style of music in my country called Mugham. It can be very competitive.” He replied quietly, an undertone of red brightening his strong angular face.
Mr. Tichner smiled and gestured for him to sit in the front row with the tenors. He sat next to Matt who still seemed to look stunned. He could give Matt a run for his spot as lead tenor indeed.
