Chapter 9 – Tomato Mask
I ran out into the hall way and down the hall to Mansur’s class.
Of course he wasn’t there anymore. I was terribly late myself. I swung around the next corner looking around wildly as I headed towards my next class, keeping a look out. I was nearly there when—
“Mandi?” a quiet warm voice called just behind me.
There he was!
Mansur had just emerged from the boys’ bathroom I had just past. He stood there surveying me with a small smile as he shook his hands off. As rarely as I saw that smile in the beginning of I had a feeling that he didn’t do it too often. Maybe here, maybe just in America, among our friends…that smile was just meant for me.
“Mandi, you are going to the class?” He had walked up to me without me registering it. Snap out of it Mandi! Pay attention!
“Oh yes Mansur, but I was looking for you! I thought we would meet after homeroom and I would guide you to next class again. I couldn’t find you so I started to look for you on the way to my English class. It’s right down the hall from here actually…”
While I rambled on his eyes grew warmer started to melt. I don’t know what he may have been thinking but I was starting to feel very uncomfortable with his silence as I kept on and on. Was he even listening to me anymore?
Aw heck even I wasn’t listening to me anymore obviously….
“….and Bianca went on ahead with Rico and…”—
“Mandi.”
I zoomed back into focus on him again and fell quiet.
“You are a….ahm….what is it…? Sweet girl. Yes sweet” my face warmed at this, “and it is nice that you worried me. Now, I am well knowing my schedule. You do not need to guide me everyday. We will both be late all times.”
My heart dropped a smidge at his words, but he was right. Since we both have somewhat different schedules and some of our classes are far from the other’s it was making us each quite late everyday, and I am sure our teachers wouldn’t stand for that too much longer.
“Ah, well okay then…”
“I want, though, to see you. Oh and Bianca. She is a strange girl, but she goes with you well, I think.”
“Yea we are two peas in a pod” I said smiling widely.
“Two pea in a what?” He looked at me confused.
“Two peas—oh you know what let me tell you later. So I guess instead would you like to meet me in the mornings before homeroom with all the gang? You know, Bianca, Rico, Matty, and I guess Darby will be there too…”
Too be truthful, I wasn’t too fond of Darby. It wasn’t because of where she was from, or what she looks like. Hey even conversing with her was okay. She seemed to have a good personality for the most part, but she just has this way of patting herself on the back and rubbing your nose in her academic achievements. That I was going to chalk up to a competitive spirit. I do know she had gone to a private school back downunder.
Still bugged me though. I mean, Bianca and Matty were practically geniuses, well Bianca maybe a really lazy one, but neither of them were rubbing my nose in their successes. I was still proud of them though.
