The battlefield settled into an uneasy calm.
Smoke drifted lazily through the clearing, carrying the sharp scent of blood and burned fur. Bodies littered the ground—wolves, broken and defeated. The soldiers stood where they were, some leaning on weapons, others staring at the carnage in stunned silence.
They had won.
But no one celebrated.
I slowly retracted the shadows, feeling them sink back into my body like a tide pulling away from shore. The weight in my chest eased, though the echo of Shadow Dominion still lingered—quiet, watchful.
Amber approached first.
Her armor was scratched, her blade stained dark, but her posture was straight, proud. She stopped in front of me and studied my face, silver eyes searching.
“You held it back,” she said softly. “I could feel it… the pressure. But you didn’t let it consume you.”
I gave a small exhale. “Barely.”
Mona snorted nearby, wiping her axe clean on a fallen wolf. “Barely is still better than losing your mind and killing us all.”
She grinned to show she was joking.
Mostly.
Mia stepped closer, her spiders already moving across the battlefield, dragging corpses away and cocooning them for later disposal. Her gaze lingered on the ground where my shadows had been thickest.
“The Dominion has changed,” she said. “It’s responding faster. More… refined.”
I nodded. I’d felt it too.
Before I could respond, a familiar chime echoed in my mind.

But the system wasn’t finished.
[SYSTEM NOTICE]
Shadow Dominion has absorbed high-density fear, death, and authority.
Evolution condition nearing completion.
A faint chill crawled up my spine.
Nearing… but not yet.
Good.
I wasn’t ready to find out what the next stage demanded.
I closed the windows and looked up to see several soldiers staring at me—not with fear, but awe. Word would spread fast. Too fast.
Amber seemed to sense it too.
She turned sharply, voice snapping back into command mode. “Clean the field. Tend to the wounded. No one speaks of what they saw here without my permission.”
“Yes, Alpha Queen!” the soldiers responded in unison.
As they dispersed, Amber leaned closer to me, lowering her voice. “You’re becoming a symbol. Whether you want to or not.”
“I never asked for that.”
She smirked faintly. “No one worthy ever does.”

Later, back at the command tent, the four of us gathered around a rough wooden table. Maps were spread out, marked with clawed routes and bloodstains.
Mona crossed her arms. “That wasn’t a scouting pack. Too organized.”
Mia nodded. “And they retreated the moment the alpha fell. Someone trained them.”
That word hung in the air.
Someone.
I placed a finger on the map, tapping the northern woods. “If they regrouped this fast, they have a base. Or a handler.”
Zayn, who had just entered the tent, grimaced. “Scouts reported strange totems deeper in the forest. Not wolf-made.”
Magic.
Dark magic.
My shadows stirred uneasily.

Amber looked at me. “That area is cursed. Old ground.”
Mona cracked her knuckles. “Sounds fun.”
Mia’s lips curved slightly. “Dangerous things often hide truths worth claiming.”
Three gazes fell on me.
I stared at the quest window for a moment… then smiled faintly.
“Prepare an expedition,” I said. “We move at dawn.”
The shadows at my feet stretched forward, eager.
Whatever was waiting in the north had no idea what it had just provoked.
And this time—
I wouldn’t be holding back as much.
