Chapter 1

Shadowwhisper's eyes flashed open, the Warriors Den was utterly silent as she peered around, hoping she hadn't woken up any of her clanmates. She shivered slightly, feeling the cold moonlight seeping through the branches of the Warriors Den. She reached out for her sister Featherfrost, pawing for her sister's soft, fluffy-white fur.

Shadowwhisper scrambled up as she felt her paw touch air and she stared with surprise at the empty nest beside her, Where is Featherfrost? She felt fear pulse through her paws for her sister and she bristled nervously.

Shadowwhisper stood up slowly, to avoid disturbing others. She made her away around the silhouttes of her sleeping clanmates. She stood outside the warriors den, feeling a gentle breeze ruffle her fur and began to walk towards the Dirt place, stepping carefully and avoiding brittle leaves that darted across the dusty ground.

She ducked silently under a holly bush, cringing as she heard a piercing crack of a twig snapped between her paws. She stepped anxiously into the forest, hoping she hadn't alerted the lithe grey she-cat, Morningnettle who stood by the entrance to camp, her green gaze scanning the forest. The lingering scent of her sister hung in the air and she tilted her head in confusion. Why would her sister leave camp? Her pale berry-pink nose twitched as she scented a stronger, more reliable trace of her sister's scent. She must have headed towards the lake! She realised, fur bristling with shock.

Shadowwhisper ran towards the lake, paws brushing the ground. She stopped slowly as she heard the faint meow of her sister and she ducked underneath a bush, peering out from between the broad waxy leaves as she watched her sister, shock sparking across her fur and her hackles raising.

''......I can't come tomorrow.......'' Featherfrost mewed, her voice barely a whisper and she gave a quick scan around with her wide ocean-blue eyes as if she was afraid to be seen by anyone. A dark figure loomed in front of her with large glowing green eyes.

Featherfrost! What is she doing?

Shadowwhisper walked towards Featherfrost silently, making her obsidian black fur, sleek and flat as if she was as calm as ever, despite the fact that her heart was racing as she thought about what Featherfrost was doing.

''Featherfrost? What are you doing?'' Shadowwhisper asked plainly, ears pricked and eyes narrowed curiously.

Featherfrost whipped around, her fur puffed up, making her look twice her size and her blue eyes were wider than ever, "Shadowwhisper!" Her eyes narrowed and Shadowwhisper thought she saw a glint of fear in them, "What are you doing here?" Featherfrost asked nervously, shuffling her paws.

''I saw that your nest was empty....and I wondered where you were, I followed your scent out of camp and here I am.'' Shadowwhisper replied, her forest green eyes gleaming in the gloom of the forest and she mewed, ''You still havn't answered my question, what are you doing?''

Featherfrost avoided eye contact and her ears were flattened with guilt, ''I-I went for a walk.....'' She lied feebly, "And I-I..."

Shadowwhisper cut her off, ''Tell me the truth.'' Featherfrost looked away, ''I'm your sister, you should tell me the truth.'' Her tail lashed slightly as she realised her sister would lie to her and she narrowed her eyes further, waiting to hear the truth and her gaze darted momentarily to the dark figure that flanked her sister.

Featherfrost's tail waved back and forth anxiously and her blue eyes were fixed on her paws, ''I-I'm in love with Acornleaf.''

Shadowwhisper gasped and felt her anger blossom at Featherfrost's recklessness and she suddenly recognized the dark figure, ''But, he's from-.''

Featherfrost cut her off dismissively, "Yes, he is from RiverClan, but I don't care." Her tail entwined with Acornleaf's and her snow-white fur brushed against his mottled brown pelt. "I won't stop seeing him no matter what you do." Her blue eyes flashed defiantly.

Shadowwhisper regained her composure, ''I will keep your secret, until I die.'' She promised, then added, "But don't think that I approve of this...this romance of yours." She turned to walk away and leave the horrid sight of her sister breaking the Warrior Code bit by bit.

Featherfrost nodded solemnly and ran up to Shadowwhisper licking her ear-tip affectionately, ''Thank you!'' Featherfrost whispered in her ear.

Shadowwhisper pulled away, ''Let's go hunting, we can't go back to camp empty pawed or else they'll assume somethings wrong.'' Which there is, she added silently, her fur bristling with apprehension. It would only be a matter of time before someone else found out about her sister's forbidden romance.

Featherfrost nuzzled Acornleaf briefly and they mewed their farewells, green and blue eyes locking together and Shadowwhisper gave a low inaudible growl. Breaking the Warrior Code would only lead to being unloyal and that was the last thing Shadowwhisper wanted to be.

They headed off in seperate directions. Shadowwhisper slinked silently off between the trees, where-as Featherfrost headed towards the lake, obviously going to try out some fishing tactic Acornleaf had taught her.

Shadowwhisper headed towards a big oak tree with a wide canopy that sent small orange and brown leaves drifted precariously to the forest floor, littering the ground with orange and rusty-brown hues.

Shadowwhisper spotted a mouse scuttling through the dry leaves and she leaned forward, tensing her hind legs, preparing to leap for the kill. She inched forward step by step towards the mouse, tail hovering a whisker-length above the ground.

Shadowwhisper lunged forward and landed squarely on the mouse, trapping it between her out-stretched forepaws and she swiftly killed it with a bite to the neck.

"Shadowwhisper!'' Featherfrost's voice cut through the silence like a claw and a shiver coarsed down Shadowwhisper's spine. Something was wrong.

Shadowwhisper headed towards the voice, shaking slightly as she scented the acrid tang of blood in the air.

''Everything oka-'' She stopped when she saw Featherfrost lying on the ground motionless, paws splayed out and a large gash across her flank that welled with blood, staining her ice-white fur a scarlet red and the grass around her was splattered with her blood.

The stench of fox swirled in the air.

Shadowwhisper dropped her prey and ran towards Featherfrost's limp body. The long red streak down her flank, oozed blood. She nosed at her sister's fur, there was still a glimmer of warmth. Where there is warmth, there is hope.

Shadowwhisper licked the blood away and tried to remeber what ThunderClan's medicine cat Windwhisker had told her about bleeding. She tore at the grass with her claws as she struggled to remember, Cobwebs for bleeding!

Shadowwhisper darted about the trees scooping cobwebs with her paw and ran back to Featherfrost and laid down the cobwebs gently on her wounds. Please be ok! Please be ok! She pleaded, sending her hopes to Silverpelt.

Featherfrost groaned as her eyelids flickered every so slightly and she whimpered once more, so feebly, Shadowwhisper thought for sure she was on her way to their Warrior Ancestors.

''Be still.'' Shadowwhisker mewed softly, leaning closer. ''Don't move.''

Featherfrost mumbled agreement and fell into unconsiousness again and her eyelids slowly shut and her body fell still.

The blood had stopped flowing ever so slightly and Shadowwhisper felt a twinge of hope.

All Shadowwhisper's hopes melted away as she realised Featherfrost had stopped breathing.
