lunch.

Lunch came at 12:05. I sat at a table close to a vending machine and stared at the wall, not bothering to eat the lunch my mom had packed for me. I'd had ednos for a while, and starting school makes it worse. About 7 chairs down the same group of people I was sitting by at the pep rally where there. No one had sat with me yet, but at this point I didn't really care.

"I don't want NEW friends!" I remembered the conversation with my mom when she'd told me we're moving. She'd told me and I had said, "What about my friends? My life is here! What happened to 'that was the last move?' Remember when you said that?!".

"This is a great opportunity for us. You can make new friends." She'd said.

I was snapped out of my flashback when a girl sat in front of me.

"Hi, i'm Carly. You're new, right?" She asked. She had long, straight blonde hair, and brown eyes, and a stocky build.

"Um, yeah. I'm Lily." I said. She began to unzip her lunch box. She pulled out a sandwich, a bag of Cheetos™, some red liquid that looked like kool-aid, and a Hostess™ brownie thing that was rolled up with white creme swirls in it.

"Aren't you gonna eat?" She said.

I shook my head. She offered me the brownie thing.

"No thanks." I said. She looked disappointed, and I felt kinda bad. I considered changing my mind and saying I'd eat it, but that would mean having to eat.

All of a sudden a coach came in and told everyone something, but I couldn't hear what. A lot of people got up and left.

"Um, what's that about? Where are they going?" I asked Carly.

"Outside. We get recess here still. Kinda weird, right? 8th graders at recess." She said.

"Yeah, my school stopped that in 5th grade." I said.

"Ready to go? We sorta have to." She said. I nodded.

I got outside and sat by a tree, leaning against it, fighting tears. Everyone was laughing, happy to see their friends- except me that is. I was alone. Had no one. Carly had gone to the bathroom, and I could see her looking for me. I didn't call her or wave, just leaned my head against the tree and closed my eyes. I guess she had spotted me, because a few seconds later I heard the crunching of leaves and her voice go "There you are! Mind if I sit here?" I shook my head and she sat in front of me. I awkwardly fiddled with grass and twigs and things that lie on the ground. "So where did you come from?" She asked. "Cade. In Victoria." I said. "That's cool. I've lived here my whole life." She said. "I've moved a lot." I said. "My dad like basically owns Goliad. All my family is here." She said. I nodded.
