H E  H E A R D  M E

Days passed and I learned to adjust with my current situation. It’s just that I haven’t completed nor begin my mission yet – to have a friend. The reason? Kasi, I don’t have any idea how to start a conversation. Aside from that, no one approaches me or befriend me either.

Like now, everyone is rushing to the cafeteria. Ako na lang naiwang mag-isa dito sa classroom. Feeling ko talaga invisible ako. No one talks to me. No one approaches me. No one notice me. No one, no one, no one. Kahit yung teacher hindi ako tinatawag sa recitation. Really, if this goes on, maniniwala na akong invisible nga yata ako. But if that’s true, isn’t it great? I have super powers! Mwahahaha! ^^

Still, I want to have a friend! Huhuhu….God, please give me one.

God?

I waited. I waited for an answer.

When I didn’t hear a response, I slowly stood up from my seat. God might be busy at the moment.

Wala akong dalang baong pagkain kaya kakain ako sa cafeteria ngayon. Yeah, you heard it right. Nagbabaon ako. Paanong hindi? Ang sarap kaya ng luto nila sa bahay. Kaya lang napansin ni Grandpa yung ginagawa ko. Pinagbawalan ba naman ako. Sabi nito paanong magiging normal daw ako kung nagbabaon ako ng snacks at lunch ko? Asan ko daw dinadala yung perang binibigay nitong baon ko.

Kahit hindi ako sang-ayon ay wala akong nagawa. Nanalo pa rin si Grandpa Pop. Sa totoo lang, nasasayangan ako sa perang gagastusin sa pagbili ng merienda at lunch. Bakit kailangan pang gumastos kung mas masarap naman pagkain sa mga kanya-kanyang bahay natin di ba? Magastos pala maging normal na student.

Napailing-iling na naglakad ako papunta sa school cafeteria. Nawala pa ako sa pagpunta doon. Kahit nahihiya akong magtanong ay lakas loob akong nagtanong ng may makita akong female student. I may have stutter at first but later on managed to smoothly talk with her. I can do it naman pala if wala ng mapagpipilian pa. And she answered my query for directions kaya I had proven I’m not invisible. Naks, kala po mandin may super power na ako.

When I reached the cafeteria, it was already filled with students. May nakita akong pila. Nang silipin ko ay pila pala iyon para sa pagkain. Nakipila na rin ako. Namahalan ako sa mga presyo ng pagkain. What a ripped off!

After I paid for my food, I scanned the entire cafeteria in search for a vacant table. To my dismay, puno na lahat. Where do I eat then?

I was about to give up and eat in somewhere else when I heard someone.

“Hey!”

I searched for the owner of the voice. I saw a female student waving at…me?

Ako nga ba talaga kinakawayan nito?

TInignan ko ang aking kaliwa’t kanan pati likod para lang matiyak kung may iba pa nga bang tao itong kinakawayan. Baka kasi akala ko lang na ako.

Pero wala naman.

Para makasiguro, tinuro ko sarili ko and mouthed “Ako?”

Tumango ito and gave a gesture for me to come.

Confused na naglakad ako sa patungo table na kinaroroonan nito.

“Do I know you?” tanong ko dito.

 Tumawa ito. “Definitely not! BUT… I know you. Ikaw si Yuri Park, am I right?”

“Y-yes… How do you know my name?”

“Upo ka na muna,” wika nito. I sat down and put the tray on the table.

“By the way, ako nga pala si Miranda Go. You can call me Mimi for short,” pakilala nito sa sarili.

“Ah…Alam mo na pangalan ko. Yuri. Yuri Park.”

“Hmmm…siguro nagtataka ka kung bakit alam ko kung sino ka? Well madali lang sagutin iyan. Magkatabi lang tayo ng classroom. Class 1-2 ako. News travel fast here in Namh Senior High. I heard you are the transfer student. I’ve been observing you for a few days. And guess what?" she paused and looked at me happily. "Pareho tayo!”

“Pareho tayong ano?”

“Pareho tayong walang friends!”

Napangiwi ako sa narinig. Why is she so happy? That’s not something to be joyful of.

“You don’t have a friend?” tanong ko dito.

Nakangiting tumango-tango ito ng mabilis at makailang ulit.

“But I have a friend.”

Her jaw fell off when she heard my statement.

“Oh…Akala ko nakahanap na ako ng katulad ko,” bitter nitong wika.

Feeling guilty, I immediately took back what I said.

“Pero sabi ni Grandpa Pop, King shouldn’t be in the list. Dahil pet ko daw siya.”

Nanlaki mga mata nito. “Does that mean, we are in the same boat?!”

I nod in agreement. Yeah, it’s the truth. I don’t have any friend…yet.

“Yeheyyyyyy!” She yelled in excitement. Napatingin pa tuloy ibang students sa amin.

Tumingin ito sa akin. Bakas ang kaligayahan sa mukha nito.

“If that’s the case, tayo na ang magfriends mula sa araw na ito,” she declared.

I looked at her blankly.

“F-friends? You are asking me to be your friend?”

“Yes, friend. Sa Tagalog kaibigan. Sa Spanish amigo. Sa Japanese tomodachi. Sa Korean jingu. Sa French ami. Ano pang language gusto mo sis?”

She’s asking me to be her friend. Whoa! Has the day finally comes that Grandpa Pop words come true. He said one day, I will have someone to be called my friend. It’s happening!

“So, friends na tayo?” she asked me and offered her hand for a hand shake.

I accepted her hand and smiled so wide it reached my ears.

“Friends!”

“Yay! I’m so happy!” she squealed as she reached my body for a hug.

Mas happy ako! ^^

Surely, God heard me! He’s not busy at all. Ang bilis nga ng answer eh. Thank you God!
