A month he said...
So, I am back! With a three-thousand-word chapter that I basically wrote in one sitting over the course of three hours! It's not pretty. This chapter could be more accurately titled: Xelqua has a mental breakdown for 3000 words!
Enjoy!
"XELQUA!" Aurum cried, the same note of despair in his voice as Xisuma had when Biffa had died.
"GEM!" he yelled again, "GEM!"
Gem came hurrying in, pausing when he saw the blonde Watcher lying in the pool of blood.
"What happened," he said, beginning work on trying to heal him.
"He snapped," Aurum said, panic setting in, "he was talking, and he snapped. He grabbed the dagger and well..."
He gestured to the unconscious body on the floor.
Gem knelt down beside Xelqua, placing his hands on his chest, letting magic flow into him, trying to heal his wound. The skin gradually sealed up, the dagger becoming unlodged, and the blood stopping.
Aurum whispered softly into Xelqua's ear, trying to coax life back into him. They were mainly things about how he was needed, he wasn't a terrible person, and begging him to come back.
"Aurum," whispered Gem, putting a hand on his brother's shoulder. "I've done what I can do, but that's all. All he can do is hold on. But if he chooses not to..."
Aurum let out a sob, trying to push the image of a limp and lifeless Xelqua out of his mind. He wouldn't let that happen. He couldn't let that happen.
As he sat there sobbing, he channeled every ounce of magic into Xelqua's body, willing the life to come back behind his eyes. Watching his chest for the rise and fall.
And Xelqua's eyes opened.
"Ohmygod," Aurum breathed, tears streaming down his face. "Xelqua. Thank the void."
Slowly, shakily, Xelqua lifted a hand to his chest, where he'd plunged the dagger in.
"What did you do?" Xelqua asked, voice a whisper.
"We saved you," Gem responded, a hint of confusion creeping into his voice.
"Is that so?" Xelqua retorted, bitterly. "And why, pray tell, did you think I wanted to be saved? I killed a man. We've exiled people for less. I've exiled people for less. I drove droves of Watchers away from us. I drove Xanthous out of here, then out of his brother's server. I did that. Why do I deserve to be saved?"
"Because it wasn't you!" Aurum burst out through tears. "It was the curse! Bellum's!"
"I still did it. I only got the curse because I murdered Bellum."
Xelqua's voice was devoid of emotion now as he slowly propped himself up.
"Then maybe it's because I love you, and I can't afford to lose you!" Aurum yelled at him, seizing forward to try to envelop Xelqua in his arms.
Xelqua shied away from the touch, pushing him back.
"Maybe you shouldn't."
"What," Aurum asked, taken aback.
"Why am I deserving of your love. There's better people out there. Charlie. Imperium. Literally anyone besides a murderer."
Aurum looked heartbroken.
