Hayden's POV!!!
We decided to meet at the art museum. I showed up 30 minutes early, too anxious to wait any longer. When I got there, I went to talk to Landon, the manager and my closest friend.
"Hey Landon." I say. He just got off the phone and is scribbling in his notepad.
"Hayden! Long time no see! Where have you been hiding!?" he exclaims and jumps over his desk to hug me.
"Behind those books!" I say.
"I hear you! Hey, I have great news!" he says, practically jumping up and down with excitement.
"And what is this great news?" I ask, curious to find out what he's up to.
"We have an opening here next month and we need someone to show their work; you were the first person I thought about. It's yours if you want it." he says.
"I dont know man, you know how I am about showing my photos."
"I know, but there're amazing! You have to display them some time. You can get a scholarship for your talent." he says, instantly becoming serious. I'm a phtographer. Ever since I held my first camera when I was 13 years old. I have a keen eye for what lies underneath everyday things: The smile of enjoying what you do, the beauty of mother nature when its not whriling a tornado or starting a hurricane; recognizing someone in one image not because they're beautiful, but because the glow of what makes you, you.
"Alright." I say, knowing if I dont do it then ill regret it later.
"Great! So what brings you here?"
"I actually have a date."
"Whoa, did I just hear you have a date? You never date." he says, shocked.
"I know but shes different. She understands and she is just unbelievably beautiful you have no idea." I say, letting the words surround me, engulf me. Everything about her is just true, real.
"Wow Hayden. She sure does sound like a keeper, when do I get to meet her? What's her name?" he asks, excitement hanging onto every word.
"Um, meet her? I guess when she comes in and her name is Penelope." I say sounding more confident and happier prenouncing her name.
"Great! Just signal me when she gets here." he says and goes back to work. I head to the back of the museum having 20 minutes more to spare and go to the Black Room, which used to be the janitors closet, that Landon set up for me. I close the door behind me and switch the light on, it immediately blankets the whole room with its intense red light. My recent pictures are ready and take them down.
The pictures are from last weeks community barbecue; the Davidson's sons were running, playing tag. Their smiles reach each corners of their faces, the grass stains on their khakis pants, and the giggles I know that were contagious. I smiled to myself and looked at the other photos.
Fifteen minutes later I made my way to stand by the entrance waiting for Penelope to appear. Landon caught my eye while he was talking on the phone and sent a wink my way, I shook my head and looked down at my feet, smiling to myself.
I took a deep breath and looked up to find Penelope coming through the door.
