Sirius at the Potter's house for the summer holidays, when he's 12 and he breaks something by accident. Mrs. Potter runs in and Sirius just freezes and hides his bleeding hand behind his back, preparing himself for a thorough beating or yelling. But Mrs. Potter just asks to see his hand and when Sirius reluctantly offers it, she patches it up and is not even angry at him, just tells him to clean the broken shards. When he asks for a broom, Mrs. Potter teaches him a cleanup spell and he's surprised at this gentle behaviour.

Later when they are eating dinner, Mr. Potter asks what happened to Sirius' hand and Sirius just looks away again, but Mrs. Potter says with a gentle shake of her head, "Oh, you know our boys, always getting themselves into odd trouble". Mr. Potter smiles and just goes back to shoveling potatoes into his mouth, not giving the matter another thought.

And Sirius can't stop smiling for the rest of the night. That statement gave him a true mother and father for a whole lifetime.
