Out of all the marauders, Lily had been friends with Remus straight from first year. Both were interested in the same things and were insulted for being a half blood and a muggle born. When James actually got together with Lily, Remus clapped him on the back, saying he was happy for him but warned with a fair deal of scary brotherliness, that if James ever dared wrong Lily, he was personally going to break all 206 of James' bones.

Lily being the first ( after the marauders) to figure out Remus was a werewolf. And once when Remus had commented " I'm hungry" she'd asked him giving a knowing Mcgonagallish look " Like a wolf ?" and Remus knew that she knew. But instead of leaving him and scorning him as he thought she would she had just smiled  and patted his arm, telling him with a fierce glint in her eyes that if anyone ever dared to insult him, they should watch out because Lily Evans' wrath was not easy.

When Remus first heard of the fateful night at Godric's Hollow, the first image that came to his mind was Lily. So full of life in her behavior and her looks. That flaming red colour of her hair and those green eyes shining like reflected light from emeralds. And he imagined those eyes lifeless, the glimmer gone from them, how he'd never be able to look into them again and understand unspoken messages from the girl he understood so well. He mourned James longest because he had been his best mate and the closest he had to a brother, but the immediate thought of lively and brave Lily dead was what actually broke him down. On the night of the battle of Hogwarts Remus had gone into battle full of apprehension for his son and wife but he also wondered in his heart of hearts whether he'd be able to see James, Sirius and Lily again. He wouldn't really mind.
