Okay, so what if Sirius was really upset about being sorted into Gryffindor? He knew how mad his family would be. He knew Bella would taunt him in the hallways. He knew that his parents would send him Howlers insulting him, telling him off and threatening him.
He could almost hear his mother's voice in the middle of the night, screaming in her high pitched voice,
"You absolute abomination of a Black! Placing your loyalty in such puerile garbage right from the beginning, aren't you ashamed of yourself? What were you thinking of, letting the Sorting Hat sort you into that house where the noble ones with head full of righteousness go? The Blacks are Slytherins! Not a single Black till now has been placed in Gryffindor and you dare destroy such wonderful heritage! We are ashamed of you, Sirius. If I see any trace of that Gryffindor rubbish in you the next time I see you, beware boy, I will not hesitate to blast you off the tapestry, and disown you completely."
He knew what his father's letter would be like. Full of disappointment and insults. His distant relatives and cousins would send him horrible things in packages like a contained hex that would make acid water splash in his eyes.
Sirius knew all this would happen and he dreaded it.
And in the middle of the night, James, Remus and Peter wake up to see Sirius trying desperately to try and change his robes green and silver like the Slytherins, cursing and murmuring under his breath.
And they are really confused until James finally asks Sirius, "Don't you want to be in Gryffindor?"
And Sirius tells them all with downcast eyes that he's scared of everything his family would say to him. He tells his friends all the cruel and mean stuff the Blacks are capable of doing and they listen, appalled. He tells them that they might disown him or cut him off from the wills.
And so James, Remus and Peter take out their textbooks and look up the spells, resolving to help Sirius in this, because they were friends. And Remus finally gets the spell but James is the one who actually turns Sirius' robes green. And they are all just giddy with excitement and delight over the cool magic that just happened.
And then Sirius finally pulls on the green robes, feeling satisfied until Peter points out that since he's a Slytherin now, so he won't be able to stay with them in their tower. And then Remus pipes up that he saw the Slytherin Prefects take the new kids to the dungeons.
And so, James anxiously pulls his Invisibility Cloak out and the four boys huddle underneath it, doing their best to not be seen and caught, helping Sirius to try and find the Slytherin common room.
And it's then, when they're giggling and tripping over each other underneath the cloak, softly cracking jokes and trying their best to find that elusive Common Room that Sirius finally realises that he doesn't need to be in Slytherin.
He has these three people who will be there for him whether he wants them to be or not. They'll stick to him through thick and thin. He doesn't need his family's stamp of approval on everything he does because now, he has these three awesome friends who are such a pleasant change from his negative relatives. And he's so grateful that he just pulls all of them into a hug and tells them that he doesn't want to be in Slytherin, that he's quite happy in Gryffindor.
So the four kids, merrily return to their tower, singing songs under their breath and laughing about how absolutely terrible Peter's singing was. And when they reach the tower, Sirius changed his robes back to red, coming to terms with the fact that he was placed in Gryffindor and not in Slytherin for a reason.
And maybe that reason was finding these three people whom he could call friends. So he bravely awaited the Howlers, knowing that James, Remus and Peter would be there for him, and together they could just joke about the screaming and insults thrown at him. And that was the day Sirius Black understood what true support was. Support wasn't just money as he'd been raised to believe. It was something deeper, as deep as friendship went.
For the first time in his life, Sirius went to bed with a smile on his face, waiting eagerly for the next day.
A/N - Sirius might've understood what support meant at midnight, but let's not forget that this girl right here, also found out what support meant at midnight.
