Sirius had a habit of shielding his friends. When they were called to Dumbledore or MacGonagall's office to be reprimanded for pranks, he'd always take the blame for the execution of it. In first year and second year, the Slytherins or the seventh years often bullied them. Sirius would be the aggressive defense of the marauders.

Though the marauders noticed and felt curious as to this habit of Sirius' they said nothing. Once in the common room after winning a Quidditch match James having had a glass too many, asked Sirius about it.

For a few minutes Sirius uncomprehendingly stared at James' face. But when he realised he just laughed and said, " I don't like getting the people I consider little brothers into trouble if I can help it."

But what he didn't say was that at home in the Black manor, he had cultivated this habit because he continuously shielded Regulus from his mother's wrath or his cousin sisters' cruel taunts. And that was why he had a strange habit of continuously throwing himself into danger to save his best friends.

James had raised a glass to little brothers and the marauders immediately.
