Michael's POV

"Go after her, Michael." My mother ordered as Zoe stormed away.

I looked to Lisa who was glaring at me.

"I said go after her..." She repeated, placing her hand on her hip.

I sighed and gave Lisa an apologetic kiss on the cheek before standing to follow Zoe.

This whole predicament could've been avoided if Molly didn't feel the need to play matchmaker. What was I thinking hiring a fan as my assistant anyway? She only does what I say when it doesn't involve Lisa.

Zoe was already close to the house so I had to jog to catch up to her. She entered the back door and began to close it, but I caught it with my foot before it shut.

She turned around and looked at me. She gasped and then diverted her eyes as she quickly wiped tears from her face.

I stepped into the house and stood in front of her, my heart aching at how pitiful she looked. This is all my fault.

"Don't worry about it..." She croaked in a raspy voice. "I'll just leave."

"Could we talk first? In private..." I asked.

I saw fear well up in her eyes. Looks like she's not ready for this dreaded conversation either. But it has to happen some time. I owe her an explanation.

After a few moments she finally nodded her head.

"Okay, let's sit in the library then..."

My heart thumped in my chest as we walked down the halls toward the library. I really hope this turns out alright.

We entered the library and sat in comfortable chairs facing each other, but we both refused to make eye contact. Our eyes wandered in every direction around the room except to each other.

"I didn't mean to make a scene at your father's celebration..." She apologized, breaking the silence.

I nodded. "It's okay, she was a little out of line..."

She seemed surprised by the agreement. "You didn't say anything to her, though..."

"Well, I just-... I didn't want to get involved..."

Yeah, I know. Stupid answer. Honestly, I don't know why I didn't speak up. The whole thing really left me speechless.

"But I will talk to her and explain that she should come to me with her opinions and things.... Not you..."

She nodded. "Good..."

We were enveloped in silence again. Damn, why is this so hard?

She suddenly cleared her throat. "I can tell you really love her..."

I gulped. "Oh, um- yeah... I do..."

She took a deep breath and stared at the ground. "It hurts..." She said softly.

I raised an eyebrow. "What does?"

"Seeing you so happy with her... I feel like it should be me..." She confessed.

Her blatant honesty really struck me. At least she's not holding back. "It was you for a very long time. For 19 years it was you..."

She looked up at me. "19 years isn't long compared to eternity..."

My eyes widened slightly as I shook my head. "I... I don't know what to say..."

Her eyes searched mine, and my heart fell as I saw her tears beginning to form. God, I don't want to make her cry. I just wish we could all be happy.
