Zoe's POV
We crouched low as we approached the house, Junior leading the way and Bill lagging behind to keep an eye out.
Junior held out his hand to stop everyone. "Stay back, I'll go check the front door."
My hands shook, making the heavy gun rattle as I watched him climb the steps to the front of the house.
I felt another hand rest against mine, and was surprised to find that it belonged to Katie, who offered a comforting smile.
"It'll be okay..." She whispered.
I nodded slowly and squeezed her hand to show my appreciation before turning my attention back to Junior.
He peered through the glass on the door.
"Do you see anything?" Bill asked.
He shook his head hesitantly. "No..."
I wrinkled my eyebrows. "What do you mean no?"
He turned to face us. "There's nothing in there... It's completely empty."
I tried my best to hide my panic as the rest of us raced over to see for ourselves. Junior stepped back so that we could take turns looking inside and lo and behold, he was right. The house was absolutely empty, not a stick of furniture inside.
My confusion settled onto my face. "But... I was just here not even a whole week ago..."
"Step back." Bill ordered.
We did as he said and moved aside as he rammed his foot into the door, forcing it open.
A cloud of dust tumbled forward and we all coughed and gasped for air.
"What the hell has happened to this place?" Junior questioned, fanning the dust from his face.
"Let's see..." Bill suggested, heading inside.
"No!" Katie stopped him, holding him back with her arm. "It's a trap..."
Bill shuffled backwards quickly. "Are you sure?"
She nodded. "I've seen this before. They knew people would come looking for him here and get suspicious when they saw that the place is abandoned. It's a set up for sure. No telling what would happen if we went in there. Most likely there's a bomb..."
As she spoke we each made a point of nonchalantly moving as far away from the house as possible.
"But, Katie..." Junior spoke. "You said that your friend was located here... Where could they possibly be?"
I snorted. "They could be anywhere... This place is over 2,000 acres."
A defeated sigh rose from the group as we considered what to do next.
"We have to split up." Bill reasoned. "Katie and Junior go south, Zoe and I go-"
"No, Bill." I argued. "If we split up, Junior's with me."
Bill groaned in aggravation. "Not this shit again..."
I shrugged, ignoring the annoyed glares from the others. I don't care if they're pissed. My son goes where I go.
Point, blank, period.
