Michael's POVThe knock at the door startled me awake. I sprang up, clutching my chest. My surroundings slowly became familiar as I remembered where I was and why I was there. A knock came again and I wrinkled my eyebrows in confusion. Where I am, no one has the decency to knock on doors.
I leaned forward. "Uhhh... come in?" I called reluctantly.
The door swung open quickly. "Jeez, it's about time..." Kelhi sighed, entering the room with a paper bag in her arms. "You must sleep like a log."
I rolled my eyes at the sight of her. "Only after being beat up by an evil, lying-"
"Here, will this shut you up?" She interjected, throwing the bag onto the bed beside me.
I was hesitant to open it, but decided it might be best to just go with the flow to avoid another ass whooping. I lifted the bag and sat it on my lap, trying to guess what it was based on the size and weight. I peeled back the paper slowly, peering over the edge of the bag to find... a chicken?
I gasped and tossed the bag away from me, covering my nose from the awful smell. "Ew! What the hell?"
Kelhi never batted an eye. "What? You asked for fried chicken..."
I waved my hands in front of my face as I coughed. "But that was..." I sputtered. "That was a whole chicken..."
She shrugged. "That's the best I could do."
I inhaled sharply as I pinched my nose closed. "That smells awful... Oh god..." I complained.
She smirked. "If I went to a restaurant I would've blown my cover. So I just went to a farmer that also happened to have a deep fryer."
"Did you even clean it? Or season it?"
I questioned, still having a panic attack from the horrible smell. Her eyes widened and she quickly cast them down to the floor. "Wait a minute, did you even take the feathers off?"She rolled her eyes. "Look, I'm not the best cook, alright?"
I stared at her blankly until for some strange reason, I felt the need to laugh. And not a little chuckle, but a loud roar. I can't even remember the last time I laughed so hard. I held my stomach as I doubled over, giggling my head off.
Kelhi raised an eyebrow, surprised by my outburst at first, but then she eventually joined in. Before long we were wiping tears from our eyes from laughing so hard.
We calmed down a little bit and Kelhi grinned. "I'm glad to make you laugh. You have a really nice one."
I smirked. "My wife used to say that to me." I said, but quickly caught my slip up. "I mean my ex-wife..."
She smiled. "You miss your family?"
I nodded and focused my eyes on my twiddling thumbs. "Yeah, I do. A lot..."
She sat at the edge of the bed, making sure to keep a considerable distance away from me. "Tell me more about them. You have two sons, right?"
I shook my head. "No, a boy and a girl. My little boy, well he's not so little anymore, he's going to turn 19 soon. He's a pain in my behind too." I chuckled. "But he's a great kid. Very stubborn like his parents, but also very talented. He gave me a hard time for a couple of years but he's finally starting to mature. I'm proud of him, I really am..."
"What's his name again?" She asked.
"Junior."
She nodded. "And the little girl?"
"Heaven. Now, that's my princess. She's 14 but she's still my baby. She's the sweetest little thing in the whole world, wouldn't hurt a fly. But she can also be a diva like her mama. Everything she does has to be as luxurious and glamorous as possible. She's very talented as well, like her brother. She dances."
Kelhi offered a half-grin. "They seem like great kids, Michael. You're a lucky guy..."
Something about the way she said that struck a nerve. I narrowed my eyes at her. "Wait, why were asking me all that?"
She shrugged. "I don't know, I was just-"
"If you touch my kids I swear I will kill you and everyone that you work with. You will not hurt my children-"
"I'm not going to hurt them! I would never do that!" She groaned, standing from the bed. "What do I have to do to convince you that I'm on your side?"
I snorted. Here's she goes with this game again. "I'll believe you after you kill me."
Her jaw dropped. "Now, that's just insulting..."
"Oh is it? It can't be more insulting than being kidnapped though, can it?"
She took a deep breath and sat back down on the edge of the bed, her back turned to me. "Zoe is looking for you..." She said softly.
My heart jumped. "Wh-what?"
She sighed and turned to me. "She's working with an old friend of mine. They're coming here for you."
I shook my head. "I don't believe you."
"Well you don't have to..."
"Shit." I muttered. "She's going to get herself hurt. I knew she would do something like this..."
I held my head in my hands as fear coursed through me. The last thing I want is for Zoe to get hurt out of all of this. I'd never forgive myself if something bad happened to her while she was trying to save me. God, I have to get out of here.
My head snapped up. "Kelhi?"
"Yes?"
"You really want me to believe that you're on my side?"
She nodded quickly. "Yes."
I knew what I was doing was risky, especially if it turns out that she's actually lying, but if taking risk means getting back to my family then I'm all for it.
"Then get me out of here." I said.
She stared at me for a long time, and at first her silence worried me a little bit. But before I could say something, she stood up abruptly and grabbed her bag off of the floor.
"Let's go." She ordered.
My mouth hung open. "Wha-... Right now?"
"Yes, the sun will come up soon so let's go. Now!" She barked.
I stood from the bed and scrambled over to her.
"Just follow me, okay? Here, take this." She said, handing me a gun.
I shook my head. "Oh no, I don't think I should be-"
"Do you want to live?" She interrupted.
I simply nodded and tucked the cold piece of metal into my waistband.
"Be very quiet, stay close to me, and use that gun when you need it. Got it?"
"Got it."
She took careful steps toward the door and held her ear to it.
"Why don't we just go out the back door?"
"Shhhhh! Because there are people guarding the gates who like target practice." She whispered.
My heart sunk as I realized just how dangerous this was.
She moved her head from the door and looked at me. "All clear. Let's go-"
In that moment, the door was pushed open with a huge force that sent both of us stumbling backwards.
Bryant stood in the doorway with an evil grin. "Not on my watch..."
And then, a gunshot.
