It was the end of our sophmore year in high school. Jude had let the ignorance roll past her and it stopped, for the most part.
We only had a week left of school until summer break. Jude and I had been looking forward to this all year. We were going up to my grandpa's cabin with my parents to stay for July. It was all we talked about, and it was all I could think about. I couldn't wait to spend an entire month away from everyone and with the most important person in the world.
All we had left to do was wrap up our classes, find out our final scores, and then we were free.
Jude and I walked in the last day of school with out heads held high and a smile across our faces. We couldn't wait to be free of this hell hole. We walked to our classes with our ear buds in and our faces covered in happiness.
When we got dismissed that day, Jude and I ran down to the creek behind our houses. We sat with our feet in the water and our heads in the clouds until after the sun went down. We ended up falling asleep and when we had woken up, it was already 3am. We would've stayed out there all night, but Jude was afraid that her mother would be so furious she'd make us cancel the trip. We ran home as fast as we could, we even turned it into a race. Jude turned to run to her door, but she quickly turned around and ran to me and jumped on me.
"This is going to be the best summer ever Alex, I just know it."
She took off back towards her door, but before she walked in, she turned and gave me a big smile and then jolted into her house. I stood there for a minute and thought about the last time I had seen Jude this happy since her father passed. It had been a while. I turned slowly and walked to my house and up to my bedroom and layer on my bed staring at the ceiling. Suddenly my phone lit up, it was Jude. She texted me. 'ALEX! GUESS WHAT!'
'What?' I responded.
'MY MOM DID THE MOST NON-BITCHY THING SHE'S DONE IN A WHILE!'
'What did she do??' I asked.
'SHE'S LETTING ME AND YOU DRIVE DAD'S TRUCKS TO THE LAKE!'
'OH MY GOD, WHAT HAS GOTTEN INTO HER?!?'
'I DUNNO, BUT IT'S GOTTA STAY.'
I layer there laughing for a minute and then she sent me another text.
'Goodnight Alex, I'll see you in the morning '
I sent her a goodnight and stared at the ceiling yet again, thinking. Jude was right, this is going to be the best summer ever.
