Chapter Twelve – The Beginning of a Bad Day
A cool breeze was what Nicolette woke up from her sleep. As she stifled a yawn and opened her eyes, everything suddenly flooded back to her from yesterday. They had never gone back to the academy! Instead, they managed to fall asleep in a field! When she sat upright, pain shot through her body. A night sleeping on the ground outside doesn’t make you feel good, nor was getting at least ten mosquito bites…
One look at her watch and she jumped up from her sitting position. It was almost eleven! Nicolette looked towards the sleeping body half a meter away from her and then sighed.
“Skyler…” she said.
He didn’t stir or wake up.
“Skyler!” she repeated, but this time he only stirred and if she had heard right, mumbled, “Let me sleep some more”.
“How can this guy sleep so much?” wondered Nicolette to herself as she made her way towards him. Slowly, she leaned close to his ear and on top of her lungs screamed, “SKYLER!”
Suddenly, he jumped up and managed to elbow her in the stomach. Nicolette let out a groan as she fell back onto the grass, while Skyler rubbed his eyes and looked about. His eyes widened when he met Nicolette’s.
“Did we really fall asleep here?” he asked.
She rolled her eyes. “No, we decided to camp over,” she replied sarcastically. “Of course we fell asleep!”
Skyler let out a sigh. “Okay, what time is it?”
“Well, looks like we slept through almost two periods of class.”
“Then we should head back. Some of the teachers are not very lenient on students. They will hunt you down if you don’t have a reason to miss their class.” he explained. “Let’s go. I suppose it’s too late to go to our second period class, so we might as well get something to eat.”
Nicolette just nodded in deep thought before she spoke. “I just remembered that I have to help with kitchen duty in the academy’s cafeteria every lunch time for the next month.”
Skyler frowned. “Why?”
“Well, all thanks to a certain cousin of yours…”
“Ahh, Devon. Well, let me see if I can get you out of detention.”
“Yeah right, besides I still have the actual detention to go to as well with the headmistress!”
He gave a whistle. “Seems like Devon’s got you tied up in a knot! Okay, I’ll just talk to Devon, try to convince him of something— Holy Crap! Where’s my car?” he said suddenly.
Nicolette looked towards the spot where Skyler had last parked it and frowned. “Well, it couldn’t have moved on its own…so—”
“You’re kidding, somebody hijacked my car?”
“Well if you look at it one way… maybe it just rolled off into a ditch or something, but that’s not likely since this is flat ground…so yeah, maybe your car was stolen.” she replied, looking toward Sklyer. At that moment, she was sure he was going to take his anger out on something. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll get it back.” she added.
Skyler gave a short laugh. “Yeah, like that’s going to happen. But that’s not what I’m worried about. I have some stuff in there that are very important to me.”
