Chapter Twenty One - Resurfacing Feelings

After Nicolette had screamed the word shark, everyone who was within a five meter radius from Nicolette started to panic, and run or swim to shore.

“You can’t outswim a shark!” shouted Skyler above all the noise. “Most sharks aren’t dangerous and won’t try to bite you, but if one so happens to drag you down, try not to squirm. That’s how a lot of people get their leg ripped off. The best thing to do is try to hit it in the nose!”

She gulped as she continued to pull Skyler along with her, “That’s real reassuring…but won’t that just provoke the shark?” she asked, while looking around to see where the shark was. Suddenly, Nicolette caught sight of three more fins sticking out of the water, not too far away from them and screamed, “We have to get out of—” Before she could utter the last word, something sharp suddenly clamped onto her leg, dragging her into the water for a few seconds before letting go. Gasping in pain, she resurfaced the water with a thousand bright dots in her eyes before slipping into darkness.

Skyler quickly grabbed under her arms and started to tow her as fast as he could toward the shallower waters, while checking for fatal injuries. Before he could get to shore, however, someone screamed. He quickly looked towards the noise, suddenly spotting a small girl about fifteen meters away. There were no adults with her and she didn’t look like she could swim very well. Skyler immediately grimaced. The situation was getting a bit more dangerous now…

“Skyler,” yelled Devon suddenly, “give Nicolette to me!”

He looked at him before nodding. Within a few seconds, Devon was carrying Nicolette bridal style, while Skyler spoke quickly.

“We’re almost back to shore, so go onto land with her and stay there.” he commanded.

“What about you?” Devon asked. Yes, he was scared shitless for his cousin’s safety at that moment.

“Look, I’m going to get the girl.  I never would have thought to see this day when you’re worried for me, but its okay. I did study the behavior of sharks a few years ago, so don’t worry about me. I’m pretty sure the shark won’t attack again,” assured Skyler.

“Sharks,” corrected Devon, “and this isn’t very assuring you know…”

He shook his head, “No, I saw the three other fins in the water as well, and if my judgment is correct, they look more like dolphins to me.” replied Skyler as he pushed her forward. “Now hurry!”

“But—”

“GO!” yelled Skyler.

As Devon stepped onto the sandy beach, he noticed a crowd starting to gather around them, while a lifeguard rushed up to them.

“Put her down while I can access her, the damage, and treat it,” commanded the brown haired lifeguard. “There’s also an ambulance coming soon, so don’t worry about that.”

It was pretty obvious to Devon how badly Nicolette was hurt because there was a bunch of large gashes on her left leg, spilling out blood at a quick rate, but he sat her carefully onto the sand.

After making sure that Nicolette was still breathing, the lifeguard had placed sterile bandages around her left leg and made sure to check every thirty seconds to see if she was still breathing until the ambulance came to get her.
