The next morning bloomed from the bark shades. I felt at peace until a horrid scream came howling in my ear. I jumped and nearly fell off my bed. It was Logan's alarm. In my ear. I yanked it into my hands and clicked the snooze button. The bed was a mess, the covers drooping over the bed. I pulled my hair back and looked around for signs of Logan. He wasn't in the bed.
I scooped myself out the bed and tripping over something, pulling me down on his carpeted floor. It was a long, wooden log thing. It had a piece of paper attached to it. On the front it said, READ THIS.
Of course, I picked it up and started to read. The wrinkled paper had cursive and neat writing said:
Hey, Brianna. Look, as you can see I'm not here. I've gone to get a hair cut down the street. I'll be back in a few. Try to keep my mom tamed, and stay away from the old papa bear. (He's nuts) . . . but anyways I'm fine, and I hope you are also. Hope you had fun in the old cave of mine . Yours truly,
-Logan
I folded it up and sat it on his dresser. I made my way across the hall to Alexis's room. No sign of her.
Then the sweet and spicy smell of sausage skipped into my nose from downstairs. Then the nice thick syrup mixed with cinnamon flowed through the air, followed by pancakes topped with a creamy topping of whipped cream.
I followed my nose and skid down the steps like a starving tiger. Once I hit the bottom, the smell got stronger. I turned my right to the kitchen and saw Alexis devouring a plate of eggs and pancakes. I wanted in on that too!
"Hey, Miss Troy," I spoke up.
Miss Troy was over the oven, fixing another batch of pancakes. "Hello, dear! Come, sit. Eat. I fixed another batch for you just in case you wanted extra."
God, I felt right at home. I could live with Alexis if my mom let me. I'd have three course meals, cooked beautifully, a best friend to bunk with, then a hot boyfriend right across the hall.
That would be any teenage girls dream.
I snatched a seat in front of Alexis as she murdered her food. She stopped to take a gulp of her orange juice, and waved. Guess she didn't have time to speak. I waved back and a good heaping plate of freshly made yellow eggs, light brown pancakes, and a thick sausage sat in front of my face. My mouth watered at the sight. "This looks delicious, Miss Troy."
"Thank you, dear." She smiled and turned back towards the oven. "Now eat up, you two have a huge day ahead of you."
A huge day?
Really?
I started savagely at the pancakes, eating the two without even preparing it. My fork sunk into the fresh brown circles and nearly ripped them into shreds.
I didn't even have time to wipe my mouth.
I looked up while eating and Alexis was done. She was wiping her mouth, now eye balling me with suspicion I kinda slowed down, but not to slow. The food was just to good.
She took one last wipe and then raised her head from the table.
Miss Troy took a seat in between us both with a surprisingly small serving of food. She wiped her hands on her apron and picked up her fork. She closed her eyes and stood in silent for a few seconds, then started to pick at her food. While she ate, she started to speak. "I'm on a diet, girls," She grinned and took another bite. "This woman needs to loose it." Then continued.
