Bright surgical lights flooded the operating room.
Doctors moved quickly around the table.
Blood stained the sheets beneath Isabella’s body.
One of the surgeons spoke calmly.
Surgeon:
“Blood pressure dropping.”
Another doctor adjusted the IV line.
Doctor:
“She lost too much blood before arrival.”
The heart monitor beeped steadily.
But weaker.
Surgeon:
“Clamp.”
A nurse placed the instrument in his hand.
Nurse:
“Clamp.”
The surgeon worked quickly.
Surgeon:
“Where is the bullet?”
Another doctor answered.
Doctor:
“Still lodged near the lower rib.”
The surgeon exhaled.
Surgeon:
“We remove it now.”
The heart monitor continued.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
FLASHBACK
Location: Italy – Earlier That Night
Matthew leaned against the balcony railing, watching the dark sea below.
Isabella stood a few feet away, arms crossed.
Neither of them spoke for a moment.
Matthew finally broke the silence.
Matthew:
“You’re angry.”
Isabella looked at him.
Isabella:
“You lied.”
Matthew nodded slowly.
Matthew:
“Yes.”
Isabella:
“Leonardo hired you.”
Matthew:
“He did.”
Her voice stayed calm.
Too calm.
Isabella:
“And you never told me.”
Matthew looked at her carefully.
Matthew:
“If I told you that the first night we met…”
A pause.
Matthew:
“You would have killed me.”
Isabella didn’t deny it.
Isabella:
“Probably.”
Matthew stepped closer.
Matthew:
“But I didn’t lie about everything.”
She studied him.
Isabella:
“What part was real?”
Matthew answered immediately.
Matthew:
“All of it.”
She didn’t move.
Isabella:
“You were supposed to bring me back to him.”
Matthew shook his head.
Matthew:
“No.”
Isabella:
“That was the job.”
Matthew:
“That was the assumption.”
Her eyes narrowed.
Isabella:
“What did he actually ask you?”
Matthew looked away toward the ocean.
Then back at her.
Matthew:
“He asked me one thing.”
A pause.
Matthew:
“If I ever found you…”
Another pause.
Matthew:
“To tell him you were alive.”
Isabella’s expression shifted slightly.
Just slightly.
