Callen
Julie looks at me in dismay.
"Shit...sorry Julie," I say, wincing. Of course. For a brief moment, I let myself believe we might actually leave without something pulling me back.
A few seconds pass before the man in the ridiculous looking outfit comes in.
"We're about to leave for vacation. Let's try to keep this quick," I immediately say.
He nods, unfazed. "No problem. I have some more things to show you." He takes out a laptop and places it on my desk. "Remember the last note, don't trust anyone?"
"Yes."
"I thought about it. Someone close to you must be involved! Who else is there for you to trust, or in this case, not trust?"
"I guess?" I can probably count the number of people here I'm close with on one hand.
"So I interviewed everyone here who I think is close to you, I told them about the notes and asked them some questions."
I immediately stand up. "You fucking did what?"
Julie takes my arm and makes me sit back down. "What did you tell them?"
"I kept it vague, don't worry. I didn't say anything regarding what the notes were about." He opens a file on his laptop. "Here are a couple that stood out."
The video begins playing. Alice, one of the interns, appears on the screen. I don't think I've spoken to her personally a single time.
We hear the detective's voice.
"Hi Alice. Thanks for agreeing to this. I wanted to share that Mr. Sterling has been receiving some anonymous notes over the past few months. Would you happen to know anything about this?"
She shakes her head. "No, I haven't heard anything." She pauses and frowns. "Is everything ok? Should we be worried?"
"No, no. It's just an interesting mystery I'm trying to solve. I've always loved mystery movies and books!" he says brightly.
I can't tell whether he was purposely trying to sound like an idiot.
"Well I hope you find him."
There's a pause.
"I never said it was a 'he'." The detective says.
She scoffs. "A woman would never do this. This must've come from a man. Someone afraid to be honest and have an actual discussion." She launches into rant about an ex who would never tell her how he was feeling.
The video cuts to the next interview. It's the quiet intern, Isabelle, I think?
"I was wondering if they're from someone here. The notes with the pink footer looked familiar," the detective says.
"You mean blue?" she corrects him.
"What makes you say that?"
Her eyes shift away and she shrugs. "O-oh, well blue just makes more sense, right? That's the colour of the branding on our stationery. If it was pink it wouldn't be internal."
The video cuts to the next interview. Hayley?
She's crossing her arms, looking at someone behind the camera. "You're seriously interviewing me?"
"On the night the first note appeared, there's security footage of you leaving the office building. You walk down the block and return around half an hour later."
