ANGELA
°°°°°°°°°°°°
For a moment… everything goes silent.
The gunshots. The shouting. The chaos outside those walls.
All of it fades into nothing.
Because she’s standing right in front of me.
“Mamá?” My voice breaks, barely above a whisper. She looks exactly how I remember her as a little girl… and yet not at all.
Her hair is longer, slightly darker. Her face - still beautiful - is thinner, like life has taken pieces of her and never given them back. But her eyes…
Those same soft, light green eyes.
The same ones staring at me now like I’m a ghost.
“Angela…” she breathes again, her voice trembling.
I don’t even realize I’m moving until I’m already halfway across the room.
Then I’m in her arms. And everything inside me shatters. A sob rips through my chest as I cling to her, my fingers gripping the fabric of her shirt like she might disappear if I let go.
“You’re alive…” she cries into my hair. “Mi niña… you’re alive…”
“I thought you were dead,” I choke out. “They told me you were dead…”
Her grip tightens instantly. “I know,” she whispers, pulling back just enough to cup my face. “I know what they told you.”
Her thumbs brush away my tears, but they don’t stop. They won’t stop.
“Why?” My voice cracks. “Why would they lie about that?”
Her expression changes. Not sadness.
Not relief. But... fear.
Before she can answer—
BOOM.
The entire building shakes violently. Dante curses behind me. “We’re running out of time.”
Marco steps forward, urgency written all over his face. “We need to go. Now.”
But I can’t move. Not when I just got her back. “Mamá…” I whisper, gripping her hand tighter. “You’re coming with me.”
She hesitates.
That hesitation feels like a knife straight through my chest.
“Angela…” she starts softly, glancing toward Marco and Martin before looking back at me. “There are things you don’t understand.”
My heart drops. “No,” I shake my head quickly. “No, I don’t care. We’ll figure it out later. We just...we have to leave.”
Another explosion echoes, louder this time. The lights flicker. Dante steps closer, his tone sharp. “We don’t have time for a family reunion. Either she comes with us now, or—”
“She’s not staying here,” I snap, turning on him.
Silence falls for half a second. Dante studies me… then exhales sharply, dragging a hand down his face. “Then move. All of you. Now.”
