ANGELA
°°°°°°°°°°°°

The second I’m pulled into the helicopter, everything becomes too loud. The blades. The wind.

My heartbeat.

“Go, go, go!” Dante shouts, shoving the door shut as the pilot lifts us off the roof.
I stumble back into the seat, my hands shaking so badly I can’t even grip onto anything properly. My mother is beside me, her arm wrapped tightly around my shoulders- but I barely feel it.

My eyes are locked on the burning building below.

On the roof we just left. On the place where-

My chest tightens. “Elijah…” I whisper under my breath.

I don’t even realize I said it out loud.
Dante hears me. His jaw clenches, but he doesn’t say anything as he looks out the window, scanning the chaos below.

The helicopter rises higher, the mansion shrinking beneath us- but the flames only grow bigger. Brighter, more violent...
Like the entire place is about to—

“No…” I breathe, shaking my head. “No, he’s still in there.”

No one answers me. Not Dante. Not Marco. Not even my mother. The silence is suffocating.

“Dante,” I say, louder this time, my voice breaking. “Turn back.”

He doesn’t move.

“Dante!” I shout, grabbing onto his arm, my fingers digging into him like I can force him to understand. “He’s still in there- we have to go back!”

“Angela.” His voice is firm. Too firm. I barely recognise my friend.“We can’t.”

“You don’t know that!” I choked out, tears spilling out, blurring my vision. “He’s not dead, he can’t be- ”

BOOM.

The explosion rips through the night. The entire building erupts into flames. A massive fireball engulfs the structure, sending debris flying into the air. The force of it shakes the helicopter violently, making me gasp as I’m thrown back against my seat.

And then...fire.

So much fire.

“NO!” The scream rips out of me, raw and broken. "No no no no- !"

I lunge forward, but Dante grabs me, holding me in place as I try to fight against him.

“No, no, no- ELIJAH!” I scream, my voice breaking completely.

The fire consumes everything.
There’s nothing left. Nothing anyone could survive. My body goes limp in Dante’s hold.

My ears ring. My chest feels like it’s collapsing in on itself. “He’s…” My voice breaks into nothing. “He’s gone…”

The words don’t feel real.

They don’t make sense.

They don’t belong to me.

“No…” I whisper weakly, tears streaming down my face. “He promised…”

My hands curl into fists against my chest, trying to hold onto something...anything....but there’s nothing there.

Just emptiness.Just pain.

“I didn’t even…” My breath stutters, catching painfully in my throat. “I didn’t even get to tell him I....”

The words die in my throat. Because I can’t say it now.

I can’t say it when he’ll never hear it.

When he’ll never look at me again.

Never argue with me.

Never touch me.

Never come back to me.

A broken sob tears through me, violent and uncontrollable as everything caves in at once.

Because he said we would make it out. He said we would have time.

And I believed him.

Gosh, I believed him.

Now there’s nothing left but smoke and fire and the space where he used to be.

And it hurts. It hurts so much I can’t breathe.

My mother pulls me into her arms as I completely fall apart, my body shaking against hers as I cry into her shoulder like I’m breaking all over again. And this time…

I don’t try to hold it in.

I don’t try to be strong.

I don’t fight it.

Because there’s nothing left in me to fight with.
