=== SKADI ===
A pair of eyes studied the broken part piece.
The white-haired Aegir grabbed her tools and began fixing the heat modulator. The piece was part of a larger device that was meant to regulate heat from a mineral extractor. Repairing it was the job of technicians. Of the hundreds employed on Rhodes Island, less than fifty had the expertise to repair critical equipment like this.
Skadi was one such head engineer.
The complicated problem was fixed in minutes. Skadi checked the part off her list and carried the heat modulator to the pile of other finished repairs completed. The morning shift would be responsible for identifying and returning the parts later.
Skadi was thankful Kal'tsit allocated her to the night shift. Less people in the engineering wing. The Aegir felt out of place amongst the regular Terrans. Her race lived under the sea in isolation away from the other races. At least, the night shift allowed her to work alone in peace with minimal interaction. Still, Skadi had to talk with other staff but those were mostly work matters.
It reminded her of her previous occupation before she became an Abyssal Hunter. Skadi reminisced of the views under the deep ocean as she worked long nights on the seabed maintaining her city's energy grid. She was good at it, her skills smoothly translating over to land Terran technology. It was easy since most Terran tech were behind compared to what Aegir fielded.
"...and this is the Grade 1 repair facility. The hardest stuff to repair gets sent here to be worked on by the experts."
Skadi didn't catch the conversation going on at the entrance. The words flew over her head since her attention was focused on the following repair task on her list.
"There's a lot of things here."
"Yeah. Only the head engineers have the knowhow to fix these things. We constantly have to hire experts from cities we come across. It's overloaded here."
Skadi scratched her head. The next component should've been here. Where did it go?
"Please return that. We're not supposed to handle anything. The senior engineers have it covered."
"You just said this place was overloaded."
The white-haired Abyssal Hunter walked around the corner after searching her nook. A vibration sensor was the next on her list. It was a critical component that allowed equipment operators to detect mechanical failure.
"That's a vibration sensor."
"I can fix it if you let me try."
"Not a chance. We break one of those and we'll have to wait until the next city to replenish our stock. Need I remind you that Rhodes Island is heading south right now. There are no cities south of the Ursus-Yan border because we are entering former Kazdel territory."
"Former Kazdel Territory?"
"There hasn't been a Kazdel nation since their destruction 200 years ago."
.
.
.
"Achoo!"
Kal'tsit rubbed her nose. Her brows furrowed while she glanced around her office. She was absolutely sure that the place was clean.
The cause of Kazdel's demise shook off the uncharacteristic sneezing episode and went back to studying the video on her screen.
