The next day, after all the commotion occurred, I decided to stay low key and tried not to attract attention. Things were already very awkward and I didn't want to make things any worst.
Law was boring and nothing interesting happened. English was pretty much the same. Math was okay because I got my test back and got a 100.
Throughout the whole day, I tried to stay as far as I could from Marc. I decided I would give him the silent treatment because those often times work the best on people.
After History, I went to my locker and got my books. On my way, I saw Jasmine.
"Hey Jasmine."
"Hey!"
"Are you going to lunch?"
"I can't actually. I need to make up my Calculus test."
"Oh really? That sucks. But the test is pretty easy. I got a 100 so that says something."
"Then I shouldn't fail."
"Did you see Sherry?"
"Yeah. I saw her this morning. She is probably going to lunch."
"Oh okay. Well I'm going to go. I'll see you after school. You're going to Service club right?"
"Yup. I'll see you then."
"See ya."
I walked away and decided to stop at my locker to empty my heavy backpack. As I was emptying my backpack, I noticed someone approaching my locker. Marc.
Quickly, I shuffled through my books and slammed my locker shut. I speed walked away and made sure not to make eye contact. I headed for the cafeteria.
When I entered, I noticed that Breonna was sitting on her table, eating lunch quietly. Only her friend Anna was sitting next to her but they didn't seem to be communicating to one another. Apparently, the football team hadn't arrived yet to fill up their table.
I walked to my own table where I saw Sherry and few other friends of hers sitting.
I made sure not to buy lunch because that would mean having to face Marc on the lunch line. I packed my own peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It would taste better than the school lunch at least.
As I kept eating, I noticed Marc enter the cafeteria, alone. Instead of going to Breonna's table, he made a swift turn in the opposite direction of her table. He was coming towards my table!
Oh no! What should I do? I don't want to talk to him with Breonna staring at us like a hawk.
I decided that the only way I could run without having to talk to Marc was by escaping to the girl's bathroom.
I immediately got up from my chair and ran from the door nearest me.
I sprinted into the bathroom. There were a few other girls in there who I didn't talk to, applying make up. To fit in and kill time, I walked to the mirror and pretended I was fixing my hair.
After 10 minutes, I left the bathroom.
There's no sight of Marc. The coast is clear.
I walked back to the cafeteria staying on guard to make sure Marc wouldn't jump out and try to talk to me.
I safely made it into the cafeteria without seeing him.
I continued eating my lunch until suddenly I heard a deep voice behind me.
"Hey Nina. Can we talk?"
I turned around to see it was Marc behind me.
Oh lord! I thought.
"Hi. Sure."
"Um. Can I talk to you outside?"
"Why?"
"It's important."
I got up and followed him out the door.
"I'm really sorry about yesterday. I can tell you are still pretty annoyed by that. I didn't mean to do all that, it was just a reflex in front of Breonna."
"Reflex?"
"Yeah. But can we put all this aside and start fresh?"
"Start fresh?" said a new voice. It was Breonna!
"Why are you two kissing up to each other these days? Marc, you are literally using her for your work. You are so fake."
"Says the girl who is making me insane. My family and friends don't like what I've turned into ever since I've been going out with you. I liked you when we first met because you were so pretty and nice. But now, there's no words to describe you."
"Oh just shut up. What was yesterday all about? Grabbing her hand pretending you too had some chemistry. Well let me tell you, if you tried to make me jealous, it didn't work."
"I don't care."
In the midst of this heated argument, I stood there speechless because I simply didn't know what to do.
If I butted in, then I would get roasted by Breonna. So I decided, I was going to make my final remarks and leave.
"I think this is between you two. I should go."
"You should. Things were so much better when you left last year after his stupid Chem final was done. Don't come back," said Breonna.
"Can you seriously shut up? Are you drunk Breonna?" said Marc.
"I won't shut up Marc."
"I have to go," I said and I walked away.
While I was entering the cafeteria, I saw the two of them arguing with each other. I went back to my table and told Sherry what happened.
"You might want to stay as far as you can from Breonna right now. She's going to blow up like a volcano if she gets angry," said Sherry.
"I know, I know. I'm going to stay away from the both of them right now."
"Good idea. At least Marky Marc is fighting for you. You are making progress."
"I guess. We became very good friends and all. But I think Marc might start thinking that I like him."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I feel like his friends know and that Breonna does to. I feel like she was going to spill the secret before."
"I don't think he knows. You are just nervous right now so your mind is making you think crazy things right now."
"I guess so."
