Chapter 14 - Love and War

Sehun's POV
I wake up to darkness and sparkling lights. Everyone was still asleep save for Baekhyun and Lay, the former keeping watch and the latter continuing to heal. I tap Baekhyun and he jumps.

"Sehun! My heart was about to jump out of my chest! Are you alright? There is a presence but it has not exhibited any antagonism towards us... Yet." Baekhyun looks at the others worriedly. "I was going to check but there will not be anyone left to guard Lay..."

"Where is it located?"

Baekhyun summons a light orb. "Follow this and it will lead you to it. Be careful."

"I'll go with you." We turn to see Kai getting up, his hand looking less black but still burned.

"Kai, you do not look too well..."

"There is something I need to discuss with you." He looks at me seriously and I remember Melissandre's thought speak.

We walked in silence and darkness for a while, the only light coming from Baekhyun's orb. Kai breaks the silence. "So... You have stirrings for her?"

I stop walking and face him. "Let's call them for what they really are. Yes, I have feelings for her. I wanted to supress them, to erase them, but I cannot help but love her. I want both of you to be happy. I am cheering you on... But she makes me happy too. I am sorry Kai."

He smiles sadly at me. "I suspected as much, seeing as you never removed her scarf from your neck. Do not be sorry for the things you feel. Now, I hope you understand what I had been talking about when I saved her then. I still feel the same way, but she might not love us in turn and she is royalty and..."

"That has not stopped Suho. That will not stop me. That has not stopped you before and that should not stop you now. Now, we have someone we love, someone we want to protect and someone to save. Have they not made you more determined?" I stubbornly say.

Kai smiled inspite of himself. "You have grown up now. I'm glad that my rival is you, Sehun. May the right man win."

"It is weird, love is. We have not known her for a long time, but just by watching her then, and the time we had with her now, we were able to feel what it is like to be happy, to worry, to maybe dream of a future with her in it."

We walk in amicable silence.

"Kai? What have you seen from Melissandre's orb?"

"It was amazing. It was the most interesting thing, better than our lessons at the Institution. Melissandre has some moves that were so unexpected, unpredictable, unorthodox, revolutionary! She and Astrid are Prodigies... At any rate, what I did back there, the deflection of her lightning strike, she has perfected. She called it Temporal Suspension and she does not need contact to teleport things, people, even enemy fire. I need to get stronger..." Kai clenched his hands into fists at his sides.

"We need to get stronger. We need to learn what she taught us and master it. Her Wind prowess was also astounding... But can we learn them in time for our next trial? She did say there will be more trials in this island..." I glance at Kai worriedly.

"We have to. We must."

"... We are suicidal, are we not? To actually face the Citadel... Do we have a chance?"

"Does it matter? We are one, are we not?" He smiles cockily.

Well, that is true.

Baekhyun's orb starts hovering above something in the sand, and as we reached for it, it vanishes. We get down on our knees and start examining the ground.

"Sehun, look at this."

I stare hard at the sand and my eyes widen in awe. This has not existed in a while.

Because on the sand was a spellbinding circle.

"It was meant to keep something in... Kai, I am not proficient in spellbinding circles."

Kai turns serious. "I think we just found the lock to our next trial. We need to call the others."

Kai holds out his hand and I take it. We disappear, leaving only our footprints in the sand.

Kai's POV
Hearing Sehun's words was a relief. That we have come to love the same person but knowing that before anything else, we must fight. I teleport us back to our camp and found that the others were starting to wake as well. Chanyeol and D.O. was up and about, probably preparing our meal. Baekhyun and Lay were asleep. Chen and Xiumin were sitting up. When they saw our faces, their sleepiness disappeared and their expression became more wary.

"There is something we need to tell you but I think it can wait for a while. Everyone needs to rest up. But to everyone who is awake, you have been graced by Melissandre's power, correct?"

They all nodded, all except for Xiumin who shook his head.

"From what Sehun has told me, you were also given some ways to use your power. We need to master them."

Chanyeol broke the silence. "Oy. How are we supposed to do that? We need time -"

"Time is not something we have, Chanyeol. Kai and I found the next trial." Sehun interrupts.

"But she - the girl - is still nowhere to be found." DO interrupted.

Sehun and I looked at each other. Right. She is not just an Earth folk. She is one of us now.

"I think we need to find her first before we can open that seal." Xiumin murmurs.

"I do not like it. I do not like it a all. To be caught in the matters of Citadel. We can leave Suho be. He chose this. We did not. We can surrender. And you two, you can forget about it and her. Trials? For some Earth wench who -" we turn to Baekhyun, who has awakened and was being held back by Lay. Before he can finish his statement though, Sehun grabbed him and lifted him up by his shirt.

We turned to look at Sehun and he wore the most heartbreaking expression. "I. Love. Her. I have lost 0420, I lost 1106, I lost 0502. Suho has been captured and please, Baekhyun. Not her. I have lost too many people already..." Tears had fallen from his eyes. He drops Baekhyun and wipes them away.

Baekhyun's expression softens. He awkwardly pats Sehun, while we were left with a shocked, awkward silence and no plan.

We were disrupted by a figure emerging from the darkness, only illuminated by our fire that seems to be growing smaller. Actually, it feels like the whole island is feeling colder. She steps out from the shadow and into the light.

"As-"

She smiles a feral smile not unlike Melissandre, only it was more... evil.

Astrid is no more.

Black wings sprouted from her back, made entirely of Darkness.

I am Cassidy. And you are going to die here. In the hands of your Astrid.
