Delta's POV
The jet took off not long after.
The low hum of the engine filled the cabin as the ground slowly disappeared beneath them, the city shrinking into nothing but distant shapes and lights, swallowed slowly by distance and clouds.
Inside the cabin, the energy didn't change.
Not immediately.
Dante was still talking, of course he was. His voice carried easily, bright and animated as he leaned forward in his seat, pointing out something outside the window even though no one could really see what he was talking about anymore.
"And then we can race on the beach! And train! And oh! What if we try launching near the water-"
"You'll lose your bey," Arman cut in flatly.
"I won't!"
"You will."
Fumiya leaned back comfortably, one arm stretched along the seat. "Relax. If you lose it, I'll just buy you another one."
"That's not the point!" Arman snapped.
Ichika sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "You're both missing the point. The point is we're supposed to rest."
Pheng snorted lightly. "Good luck telling that to him."
Taka chuckled quietly, shaking his head.
Normal. Noisy. Alive.
...
And somehow, that made the irritation worse.
I leaned back into my seat beside Pheng, pulling out my phone. My thumb moved across the screen, scrolling without purpose. Messages, apps, anything-
Nothing registered.
Because every few seconds, my attention drifted anyway. Across the aisle. To him. Dante.
Still talking. Still laughing. Still leaning just slightly toward Gwyn like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like it didn't mean anything.
...Tch.
Annoying.
I locked my phone with a quiet tap, jaw tightening slightly as I turned my gaze toward the window instead.
Clouds.
Endless and soft, stretching in every direction. Bright where the sunlight hit them, shadowed where it didn't.
Quiet.
Too quiet compared to the noise inside my head.
Time passed. Slowly.
At some point, the energy in the cabin began to shift. Not all at once. Just... gradually.
Voices softened. Conversations slowed. The excitement dulled into something calmer, more relaxed. Even Fumiya's voice, loud as ever, eventually faded into silence.
For once, the cabin grew still.
The hum of the engine became the loudest sound.
And without thinking, I glanced back.
Dante wasn't talking anymore. Of course he wasn't. He was asleep. After all that energy earlier, it made sense. Running around the airport, talking nonstop, barely sitting still- It caught up to him at some point.
His head tilted forward slightly, then jerked back up. Then forward again. Unsteady. Like he was trying to stay awake but losing.
My gaze lingered, longer than it should have.
