Chapter 24

The cat had my tongue completely.
For once in my life, I didn't have a smart remark. Didn't have an excuse. I didn't have a backup plan.
I just sat there frozen.
Because judging by the look on Micah's face, I honestly didn't know how this conversation was about to go.
And baby...
if looks could kill, I was already in the right place to be brought back to life.
Micah never said a single word.
He didn't have to.
Everything I needed to know was written all over his face.
The disappointment. The hurt. The questions.
It was all there.
After a few moments, he quietly got up and left the room to go smoke a cigarette.
The second that door closed, I grabbed my phone and responded to Keith as fast as humanly possible. Then I blocked him immediately afterward.
At that point, there was nothing left to discuss.
When Micah finally came back into the room, something strange happened.
Nothing.
No argument. No confrontation. No yelling.
It was like the entire situation had been placed in a box and shoved into a corner for another day.
Baby boy was brought back into the room. Visitors came by. My push gift arrived.
Life kept moving.
But underneath all those smiles and congratulations, I knew something had changed.
And so did Micah.
A few days later, the discharge day arrived.
Micah loaded me and baby boy into the car, took us home, spent a little time with his son, and then got back on the road.
Before he left, the only thing he said was:
"I'll be back for his appointments."
That was it.
No kiss. No "I love you." No conversation.
Just those words.
And honestly, they echoed through my head long after he drove away.
From that day forward, I didn't hear from him again until it was time for our son's first pediatrician appointment.
True to his word, Micah showed up.
Right on time.
But instead of focusing solely on the appointment, he immediately started asking questions about paternity testing.
DNA testing.
I won't lie...
that hurt.
Not because I didn't understand why.
I did.
After everything that happened, I would've probably had questions too.
But this was Micah.
The one person I never expected to doubt me.
The doctor gave him the information he needed, and afterward we left.
For the first time since the hospital, Micah finally spoke to me about something other than our son.
He asked where we were going from there.
How we were supposed to make this work.
How we were supposed to raise a child living in two different cities while trying to repair a relationship that was already hanging on by a thread.
And honestly?
For the first time in a long time, we had a real conversation.
Eventually, I made the decision to move back to the city where he lived.
Partly for our son.
Partly for us.
And partly because I still believed there was something worth saving.
Slowly, things started falling back into place.
We communicated better. Spent more time together. Started rebuilding trust one piece at a time.
For a while, it felt like everything was finally coming together.
The family I always wanted. The stability I always searched for. The future I had dreamed about.
For the first time, life felt peaceful.
Almost perfect.
But I've learned something about life.
Whenever things feel too perfect...
you better pay attention.
Because somewhere in the distance, a storm is usually forming.
And this storm wasn't another cheating scandal. It wasn't another breakup. It wasn't another baby mama.
No.
This storm was different.
This storm carried loss.
The kind of loss that changes people forever.
The kind of loss that divides your life into two parts:
The person you were before... and the person you became after.
And baby...
I had absolutely no idea that the worst chapter of my life was about to begin.
