Chapter 60 ⚜ Ghost World

Present

In Eichen House, Aiden asks me if anyone saw him again.

I say "no"

He asks me what happened next after the start of senior year.

I'm strapped to a gurney and in tears. I say I know that Aiden isn't really there and who I'm talking to.

His face becomes that of Valack, although without the trepanation hole in his head. He asks me again what happened to my friends.

"I don't remember"

Flashback

In the woods, Elena's training on one of Alaric's mannequins. I'm sitting waiting for my role to train her too. Alaric shows her how to stake a vampire with a sleeve and two stakes in it "So the pressure of your punch ejects the stakes"

Elena says "Easy enough" She tries but the stakes stay in the sleeve "That's weird" She tries again but it doesn't work "Must be jammed or something"

"You're not strong enough. Better start lifting some weights, put some meat on your bones"

"Thanks for not sugar-coating it"

Alaric takes something from his bag and shows it to her "You know what this is?"

"A vervain grenade. I've used one before"

"Then you know the element of surprise is your only advantage when it comes to a vampire" He pulls the pinout of a grenade and throws it in Elena's hand "Surprise"

I shout "Elena NOW!"

"Oh my god" She throws it in the air and the grenade explodes "This isn't a joke to me, Ric"

"You think I'm joking? Vampires will take whatever they want. They will hurt whoever they want. And they'll do it without remorse. It's their nature"

I say "Always be ready, the most important role"

Elena says "You don't have to use pronouns. You can say Stefan"

Alaric says "Look, I get why you're here. Stefan hurt you. You don't want it to happen again"

"But you think that I'm crazy. To believe that I can protect myself from a vampire who's flipped the switch on his humanity"

"I think you found a way to get out of bed this morning. And that makes you the strongest person I know. I think that you can do pretty much anything"

Alaric gives her the sleeve with the stakes and she puts the sleeve back "Your turn, Lydia"

"Now, there are some rules" I trained Elena on some of the things that Dean taught me

In High school, In the hallway, I saw Stefan. Alaric, and Elena in his classroom, Alaric asks "What the hell is he doing here?!

I rejoin them "Is that Stefan?"

Elena says "Klaus compelled him to watch over me. Apparently, I'm one of Klaus's assets now that my blood is the only way he can create a hybrid"

"Now he's a bodyguard?"

"I don't know what he is. But he's definitely not Stefan" The school bell rings "Look, his being here is not good for any of us. We have to do something"

"We must, I will wait in the cafeteria I have biology class now"

Alaric says "I will follow you after the class" The students enter the classroom.
