"It's a beautiful day," Hermione smiled thoughtfully, gazing up to the clear February sky. There was not a cloud to be seen as the she, Evelyn, Ron and Harry crossed the courtyard of the Wizarding school. Christmas had now passed, but the revelations from before still felt raw. In those first few weeks after discovering that Sirius Black was Harry's Godfather and likely Evelyn's father, the pair had looked disastrous. It wasn't until they spent some much needed time at The Burrow that they started to feel and look better to their peers.
Molly had been near hysterical with worry when her children came home for Christmas and explained to her what had happened. She demanded to know why one of Arthur's colleagues from The Ministry informed them that they were to be extra vigilant of whom came in contact with Evelyn and Harry. No matter what anyone told her, Evelyn and Harry were her children. She refused to accept the idea that anyone could take away her role as Evelyn's mother, despite how sympathetic she felt for the woman she remembered from her own time at Hogwarts.
The story of Amelia's death had come as a shock to her old classmates. They all theorised that she had been present at the Potter home when Lily and James were attacked, but Evelyn's recall of what she heard the Minister say told Molly and Arthur a completely different story.
She had already informed both of them that nothing would sway her to call them anything other than 'Mum' and 'Dad'. Evelyn felt it was appropriate to take initiative, and speak to her parents about how she wanted to handle the situation. On more than one occasion, she had caught them whispering, before they would silence themselves as she entered the room. She had even heard them arguing late one night, which had reduced her to tears as the guilt of causing them pain caught up to her.
Thankfully, Harry had been staying with them, and came to check on her. She thought that there would be trouble in their friendship with the revelation that her birth father was responsible for his parents' death, but he held nothing against her. They spent the rest of the AM hours talking about mindless topics. Harry kept the conversation far away from Sirius Black, sticking to anything to distract his friend as he couldn't stand to see her tears anymore.
Despite the distressing events that had taken place in December, Evelyn had a wonderful holiday. Their return to Hogwarts had been disappointing because being with her family was what she needed, and she desired that for a little longer. Everyone seemed to be feeling the same way, so Ron proposed going to see Hagrid one Saturday morning to ask about the results of the trial investigating the incident with Buckbeak. They hoped that some good news would be a mood booster for the group.
"Gorgeous," said boy agreed, before his face turned sour and a glare targeted to the girl beside him. "Unless of course you've been ripped to pieces!" He snapped.
Harry frowned at the strange comment. "Ripped to pieces?" he repeated. "What are you talking about?"
"Ronald has lost his rat," Hermione answered, releasing a sigh of anger.
"I haven't lost anything! Your cat killed him!"
"Rubbish!"
Evelyn remained quiet, not wanting to get between her brother and best friend. She wasn't sure if Crookshanks was responsible, but honestly she wasn't concerned if that was the case. She wouldn't miss her brother's rat either way.
