Theodosia watched Ahuil walk to the settlement hammock and get in. It rose up into the branches and the great elm swallowed him in an instant.
Her breathing quickened. She felt as if she had never known him or this place. That she would be back in England in an instant and left only with vague memories that would never seem quite real.
She clenched her fists by her side and concentrated on feeling her feet resting on the solid ground. The sound of the river rippling over the rocks. The smell of crisp dew and earthy mud. She had come to the Nextic world full of hope, ready for her life to change. And she had found adventure, beauty and above all, love. Even if this love had flourished and died in an instant, she had felt it and it had been true. And what a beautiful thing that was - to experience something greater than herself, even for a moment.
Theodosia looked along the riverbank and watched the tepid morning light fight to break through the mist. A bluebird swooped down, cutting through the fog. He rested on the shore of the water and dipped his body in, ruffling his feathers as he bathed. She hadn't seen a songbird in the forest for some time. The creature twittered and shook the water off his feathers before he took to the air again, singing as he went.
The next chapter of her life was beginning - that, Theodosia knew for sure. She needed only the courage to take the next step forward and start the rest of her life. A few weeks ago she wouldn't have thought she was strong enough. Now she was a woman who had fended off half-beings, left home, and opened her heart to love.
One tiny step. She smiled slightly. That was only the beginning of what she could do.
