Behind the scenes, beyond the velvet curtain and the golden light, Lisa stood alone for exactly five seconds. Because she didn't have more than that.

But it was enough.

Her palms had already started sweating around her cue cards, her heart pounded so hard it echoed in her ears, and even so she could still make out the soft murmur of hundreds of voices beyond the stage. There were too many people she had to impress tonight, quite a few whose mouths deserved to be shut. And for a second, anxiety squeezed at her throat.

Then she closed her eyes and inhaled slowly.

She wasn't a timid little girl, nor some inexperienced fool facing this for the first time. Lalisa Manoban was, once again, that girl.

The little girl raised in rooms like this one, beneath crystal chandeliers, surrounded by champagne flutes and old men whispering business deals over glasses of whiskey. Over the years, she'd watched her father command legions of corporate men, win negotiations, seal deals, and then throw her a knowing wink.

He had always known that behind that huge, sweet smile was his rightful heiress. The girl who would carry the Manoban legacy with enough strength and dignity to honor it.

Dancing Queen began to play in a beautiful orchestral arrangement. A coincidence or a gift from someone thinking of her, who knew, but it made her let out a quiet giggle.

Young and sweet, only seventeen.

That was around how old she'd been when she traumatized both herself and the man she loved so badly that an entire mess had to be unraveled afterward, and here they were now.

Still young and sweet.

She almost laughed.

"Get it together," she murmured under her breath. "You were born for this."

When they announced her name, she let out a slow breath and stepped onto the stage.

The lights caught the sculpted lines of her Robert Wun gown, following every fluid curve as it moved with her. The room shifted the moment she appeared. Conversations quieted, heads turned, and cameras lifted.
