blame @TheAnalogyQueen and also accept her as cowriter we basically wrote it together in our dms

tw: major character death, death, more death, war

technically this is jaxk, but it ended up being heavily jack centered, and only became jaxk near the end

EDIT: i completely rewrote it guys like same concepts but really different. i apologize for not giving you the angst i had promised, i wasn't in a great writing mood when i wrote this so it came out a little rushed. i think i've accomplished the whole angsty thing now.

um be prepared ig

Jack couldn't quite remember how he'd gotten here.

One second, he was fighting a gargoyle, trying to hit the weak spot under it's stomach. The next, searing hot pain was causing him to fall to the ground looking down at the puncture wound in his stomach from the creature's claw.

The rest was a bit blurry, but now he was sitting behind a large rock, trying to breathe through the pain that enveloped his body every time Jax touched the wound.

"Shh, I know," Jax whispered. "I'm sorry, I need to clean this. If it gets infected, there's no telling how long it would take to get you to a medic, we're a good 10 minute walk away from the medic station."

"I'm fine," Jack rasped, inhaling sharply as Jax wrapped a strip of cloth tight around the wound. "Do you just carry that around with you?"

"I like being prepared," he muttered, before wiping his hands on the grass, staining it red- the same color of the sky. Jack didn't even wanna know how Alva had done that. "Are you feeling okay?"

"Considering I've been impaled?" Jack let out a sigh, then wincing because fuck it hurt to breathe. "No. But I have to get out there. I don't have a choice."

He could see Jax hesitating. But he knew he was right. If he stayed here even just a couple minutes longer, one of Alva's army members could find him, and he would be completely vulnerable. Staying here would make him a liability. And he would be damned if he let himself die so pathetically.

With Jax's help, he stood up, swallowing hard on the bile that rose in his throat. He felt dizzy, but he couldn't just sit here and do nothing, not when they needed him to fight. He knew that even taking down 5 gargoyles or people would be a help.

"Try to find Gilly or Kayla," Jax instructed. "They both have wands with them, they probably have a healing spell that'll make you feel better."

Jack nodded, and turned to go, when he felt a hand on his arm. He turned back around.

"We're gonna win this, okay?" Jax said softly, eyes searching Jack's, as if he was looking for reassurance in that statement.

"Of course," Jack agreed. "We're gonna win, and get our happily ever after."

"Good." Jax pulled Jack in for a kiss, then ran to help Ollie, who was currently surrounded by Wickeds- the name they'd given to the people that joined Alva's army.

The whole reason they were in this war was because the treacherous witch had crawled out of whatever abyss she'd been banished to, and decided she wanted revenge. And revenge meant death.

She'd poisoned the minds of the innocent, turned them against their friends and family, this time with promises of happy days, no longer lonely or sad. She swore to them that they would be loved, that they would all be a family and help each other.

The reason Jack knew that was because she'd tried it with him. Slipping into his mind, promising him things. And Jack had almost fell for it- at least, until the day with Jax, when they'd laid on the grass outside FTRS and spoke their dreams out loud. About the future. About them. About commitment. And Jax had made a promise that beat anything Alva could ever offer.
