Y/n's POV
A little over a week had gone by since Tina's birthday dinner, and here a nigga was. Pulling up to Beyoncé's gate on a late afternoon without notice. I parked, walked up, and knocked once. When Bey opened the door she looked surprised for half a second, then her face went blank.
"What are you doing here?"
I kept my hands in my pockets and shrugged. She stared at me for a second like she wanted to call bullshit, then stepped back and let me in. Didn't say nothing else.
Upon entering, it was quite as fuck.
I glanced around as I followed her inside. "Where everybody at?"
Bey didn't look back at me. "Blue's with my mama for the week. Shawn's still in New York."
I nodded once, filing that information away as we stepped into the kitchen. She went straight to the stove, stirring a pan like she knew what she was doing. Standing in only a long white button up which I assumed was Shawn's.
I leaned against the counter and watched her for a second.
"You cookin'?"
"Obviously."
I raised a brow. "Since when you cook?"
"Since I learned."
I smacked my lips. "Aight, smart ass."
I pushed off the counter and stepped closer, eyeing the pasta sauce she had going. Before she could stop me, I dipped my finger in and tasted it. She slapped my hand away fast ass hell. "Don't touch shit."
I licked my finger anyway. Shit was good as fuck. I ain't gon' lie.
She side eyed me but didn't say nothing else, just kept moving around the kitchen. I stayed where I was, watching her. The way she focused. How natural she looked doing something she used to swear she couldn't do. Some things had changed.
When she finally turned the burners off, she wiped her hands on a towel and glanced over at me. "You want a plate?"
I nodded.
She fixed both of us something and we ended up standing across the island from each other, eating in silence. Just the two of us and whatever was still sitting between us from the last time we were in the same space.
I waited until she'd taken a few more bites before I spoke.
"I'm sorry for the shit at your moms."
Bey didn't look up right away. She finished chewing, then set her fork down.
"No, you're not." She said, tilting her head. "But it's okay."
I nodded once, hiding my smile as I went back to my food. Letting the silence stretch a little longer before I asked the next thing. "So how you and Shawn?"
She glanced at me. "We're okay."
I raised a brow. "Just okay?"
Her expression shifted. "You're in my business?"
I set my fork down and rested both hands on the edge of the island, looking at her straight. "You are my business." I told her.
"Try that shit with somebody else."
Neither one of us looked away after that. The air got thick real quick. She was still holding my gaze, but I could see the way her shoulders had tightened. Despite that, Bey was the one who broke the tension.
She cleared her throat and pushed her plate a little to the side.
"Y/n, why are you here?"
I didn't answer right away. Just looked at her for a second and shrugged. "I got a question."
