Bey's POV
_____
"Kelly, ride with me."
I had my phone wedged between my shoulder and ear while I shoved my feet into heels I didn't even feel like wearing.
On the other end of the line, I could hear Y/n exhale hard through her nose.
"I'm tellin' you, the meetin' ran over."
"And I'm tellin' you." I snapped, yanking my keys off the counter. "You're supposed to be picking them up."
"It's your week."
Kelly paused in the doorway, eyebrows raised. I waved her off.
"I know that shit, Beyoncé." Y/n said, voice frustratingly calm. Too calm.
"I can't tell." I continued, already halfway out the door. "It's thirty minutes before they get out and you're not at the school."
"I didn't know it was gonna go over."
"Regardless, Y/n. A meeting should never be able to go over when you know you have our children to pick up." I shot back. "That's the dumbest shit ever."
"You pick up and leave. Tell them you have to go. It's your company!"
Silence.
Then a quiet huff.
She wasn't yelling back. Which almost made me more irritated.
"What do you want me to say, B?" She asked evenly. "I'm sorry. Aight?"
Kelly slid into the passenger seat while I got in the driver's.
I shut the door harder than necessary.
"It's not about you saying sorry." I said, pulling out of the driveway. "It's about you handling your responsibilities."
"I am handling them."
"No, you're not."
Another exhale on her end. I could picture her jaw tight, pacing in her glass office, hand on her chin, trying not to snap.
"I got somethin' important on the table right now." She said, voice lower. "I can't just walk out."
"And I got three kids who are going to be waiting on a parent who isn't there." I replied. "You see how that works?"
That one landed.
I heard the shift in her breathing.
"They ain't gon' be waitin', yo." She muttered.
"Rumi and Sir probably just got outta tutoring and Blue probably just wrapped up practice."
"Shut the fuck up, Y/n." I said flatly.
Kelly glanced at me again. I shook my head once.
Y/n went quiet for a beat.
Then, softer. "I just don't want you to make this shit a thing, B. Like I forgot about them or some shit, they're okay."
"I didn't say you forgot."
"But you're actin' like I don't care."
I gripped the steering wheel tighter.
"No, I'm not." I said. "This is your week and your schedule looks crazy, understandable. Mine is just as crazy but I never let it spill over when it comes to my kids. You seem to struggle with that. Every time."
"That's not fair."
"What's not fair is Blue being old enough to notice when you don't show up on time."
