20: Outsider

I have never been that girl.

I am not the girl you see at every party,

kissing boys on the mouth

and girls on the cheek.

I have never been that girl

who speaks without raising her hand

or shouts at football games.

I have always been the girl

in the corner of the room,

black rimmed glasses peaking over

the top of a good book.

impressing my english teacher

with the words I put on paper.

the girl who spends hours at the mall

in the book store

rather than the makeup store.

the girl with band tee shirts

from the 80's.

the girl who knows more about punk rock

than most girls know about

the music on the radio.

see I am the type of girl

who enjoys kisses in the rain

big sweaters and coffee shops

rather than vodka and crop tops.

I am the girl who sits in the corner

writing poetry while her classmates

talk about last night's party.

the girl who gets excited

over book reports and creative writing.

I learned from a book I read once,

while the others were at parties

while I was at home,

that there is a word for someone like me,

and lord,

what a fitting definition.
