One thing people don't know about me
Is that I have loved a lot of people
From the outside,
I know what it looks like.
They see someone who moves
From one person to another,
someone too easy with her heart,
someone they can call a slut
because it is easier than asking
why she keeps giving herself away.
But the truth is-
I see sadness in people.
I see the ones who are crying,
the ones who are lonely,
the ones still longing for someone
they cannot have.
And something in me
always wants to reach them.
I want to offer them myself.
I want to love them
the way I think they deserve to be loved.
I want to hold the parts of them
that someone else abandoned
and make them feel, even for a little while,
that they are worth choosing.
But then they become happy.
Their eyes become lighter.
They stop longing.
They stop hurting.
And somehow,
that is when something in me begins to leave.
Not because I wanted them broken.
Not because their hapoiness hurts me.
But because somewhere out there
is another person sitting with the same sadness
I once saw in them.
And I feel myself searching again.
For another lonely heart.
Another person longing to be chosen.
Another person I can love
Until they remember
how to be happy without me.
Maybe that is the part of myself
I never understood before:
I have always know
how to love people who need love.
I am only beginning to learn
how to stay
When they no longer need me.
