"You what?" I couldn't have just heard that right.
Justin seemed to have broken out of his spell. He looked up at Acadia, new fire in his eyes. "What the-" he shut up after Acadia glared at him.
"You don't remember accident?" she asked me innocently. "It's not very nice to forget your best friend and her tragic death, Sasha!"
"I'll never forget. Or what happened to her," I practically hissed as my throat closed. "Every night it feels like I can hear her scream surrounding me..." I shuddered, closing my eyes. My voice caught in my throat.
Justin turned to me, his eyes sad and questioning. "What happened?" he whispered. I looked at him. He didn't dare touch me for fear Acadia would attack us.
I took a deep breath, steadying myself before I began, keeping Justin's face in my vision. It was the only thing that was keeping me from breaking down. He smiled as if to coax me, that it was OK. "Last year," I started, the memory replaying in mind as though I were watching it all over again. I didn't want to go through this again. "My best friend Cammie and I went to visit a beach on a family trip. It was nothing special, just a sandy area next to the water in Ontario. We were in the water, swimming and goofing off, just having a good time. I had invited Acadia to come along," I shot a glance in her direction, but quickly looked back at Justin as I felt myself starting to shake."But she she said she couldn't make it. Anyways, we were swimming for a bit, and Cammie wanted to tell me something. She told me it was incredibly important but she LOVED dragging things out to torture me. She said she would tell me after we had had some fun in the water, but," my voice broke, and so did my inner strength. The shaking continued, and now tears began to fall. The memory cut through me. "She never got out of the water. We were splashing each other, and at one point Cam dove into an oncoming wave. Out of nowhere a Sea-Doo cut through the water. She had come up for air... there was no way she could have moved in time." I couldn't relive this moment. I was heavingand sobbing. Every muscle in my body shook with fear and dread as I knew what happened next. "The Sea-Doo hit her. Her scream will forever be implanted in my memories. The sound the Sea-Doo made when it hit her head was horrifying. Shock had taken over me, everything had just happened so fast. Her killer jetted out of there, and I found myself swimming in a pool of blood screaming." I gasped as I completed the memory, the shock and pain threatening to engulf me.
Justin took my hand, shaking it. I barely felt it. "Come back to me Sasha," he whispered, "It's okay, it's fine..." The small comforting words did nothing. I couldn't stop myself. I heard the engine of the Sea-Doo speeding as far away from the accident as it could. We never found out who the driver was. Back in the present, Acadia was laughing again.
"Wow," she clapped her hands, as if the story was a playful, joyful tale about bunnies and ice cream. "You sure remember things well!"
Her irritating voice snapped me back to the present. Something dawned on me. The realization of it shook my sore body. "You're telling me," I said, shock and fear taking over me once again, "that you... Killed Cammie? You were the one on that Sea-Doo?" This was too much for me to believe...
"She knew too much," Acadia shrugged, "I couldn't have her telling my secret. It was a small price to pay for knowledge on her behalf!" She was cackling now. Like and old, murderous hag.
Suddenly Justin shot up and hit her over the head, a loud crack sounding through the room. He opened his fist to reveal his phone; one that was now cracked. Acadia fell silent instantly and hit the floor with a dull thud.
~~~
Acadia killed Cammie. Acadia killed Cammie.
This was really messed up. My mind couldn't process it.
